I'm wanting to make a small stacked cake for my sister-in-law's baby shower. Will it look funny to make a 10 inch 2 layer cake with a 6 inch 1 layer cake on top? I don't want it to be too big and I've never done a stacked cake before so I don't want to go too crazy with my first one. icon_smile.gif I just need help with the vision. Thanks!

Welcome to Cake Central. Check out the Gallery and look at all the wonderful Baby Shower cakes.
There are lots of stacked cakes in that catefory.

Also, go to the Articles section and there are instructions on how to stack your cake with dowels or pillars.

Hope this is helpful to you. Have fun!!

Thanks for the advice, Cindy! I've been looking at the cakes in the gallery and I'll definitely check out the article about stacked cakes. So do you think that a 1-layer 6 in. cake would look funny on top of a 2-layer 10 in. cake? I just worried about it looking like it's missing an 8-in. cake in between. Thanks!

The differences between sizes is ok, but not sure about one layer on top of a two layer.

Are these the only sizes you have? An 8" and 6" or 8" and 4" wouldn't be too big. I just think each tier should be the same height. Guess it depends on what design you're doing.

I agree, I think both tiers should be relatively the same height. Unless your top cake pan is deeper than the bottom ones. Its all about proportion. Also, make sure you have about 2 - 4" between each consecutive tier for really good borders and overall aesthetic appearance.

I have other cake pan sizes I could use...the 10 in. and 6 in. were just my first thought. I guess I'll keep thinking about what I want to do. I really appreciate everyone's comments about the heights of the cakes and the tips to make it look right. Thanks so much!

Ahhh, don't stifle your creativity! icon_lol.gif You could always use just one layer and torte it for the 6in. It really depends on the design of your cake. One layer on top would be cute for a # of designs-making it look a stand for the topper you're using to sit on or having a sleeping baby laying on a rug or a rug with assorted baby toys and a fondant plaque in the background saying welcome baby.

What the others have said is true about normally keeping a 4in tier difference and keeping the height the same but cake is supposed to be fun and creative so play with it!

Yes, Dodibug is right. I personally hate it when customers want me to copy something I've already done - there is no creativity in that and is actually quite boring. I try to customize the original design so its unique for them. When you 'go with the flow' you end up with something much better than planned. If you have an elaborate plan, you tend to stress over getting it just right. When the idea is in your head and you come up with it along the way, you truly see when the career goes back to a beloved hobby!

That was kind of my thought, dodibug, to have the 1-layer on top be where my design was. I was going to do pastel polka dots on the cake to match the invitations and then on the top cake, have a baby stoller and my saying. I don't know....there are so many decisions that go into this! icon_smile.gif Thanks for helping to get my creativity going.
