What type of surface is best to roll out fondant on? I've seen on the cake challenges on food network, that they just roll it out on the counter. I am getting ready to remodel my kitchen and was checking this out.

I roll my fondant out on a piece of heavy duty upholstery vinyl from the fabric store. It's ridiculously cheap and works great!

My formica counter works fine, especially with a light spray of Pam, most of which then gets wiped off.

thanks, what do you use to dust the counter or vinyl with, I saw someone use a little pouch like thing and just bang it on the counter, I usualy sprinkle some powdered sugar on my little mat, it doesn't work that well and clumps up. Any tips on this?

I personally like to roll my fondand out on a mat covered with crisco. That away I can just pick it all up and lay it over the cake and peal it away.

I have a bar top that I can not roll fondant out on (on the mat or not) because it has ceramic tiles on it and leaves groves where the grout is. So if you put in something like this you may have to do it on your kitchen table or something like that.

I bought a box of disposable diaper liners and use this to make my pouch filled with cornstarch or powdered sugar. It works very well as only a small amount of the powder is dispensed each time. Just place cornstarch or powdered sugar in the center of one diaper liner, bring the edges up and tie with a rubber band.

I read on here that someone uses an unused knee high or thin nylons cut off filled with powdered sugar and tied off at the end. Thought that it was a great idea.
