I had a Wilton course I second class scheduled tonight at 6:30. I work a full time job and instruct in the evenings. I got to the store tonight and there had been a major power outage.
All the businesses were without power. Even the stop lights were out.
Called my education coordinator and made sure I could hold class tomorrow night. Called all my students and they were ok with it except for 2 people. (they are friends) and attend together. They can't make it tomorrow night or the class on Thusday night. I asked if they could come a little early next Monday night and I would got through lesson 2 with them. They can't do that. They were really upset and I tried to accomadate them and asked what I could do to make things right. They wanted me to come to their house tonight and go through the class with them! Of course I can't do that, not to mention this has thrown my schedule off as well. Have a cake order due Wednesday morning and a fair entry due Thursday night with out of town company coming in Wednesday night icon_cry.gif

I really tried to make it work, it is not my fault that a transformer blew and the store was without power. The store suggested I reschedule the class as they didn't know when the power would be restored. It had already been out for 2 hours. I have 11 students in this class and they were the only ones that seemed to have a problem.

Sorry this is so long, but I really felt bad and just don't know what to do to make it up to these ladies icon_cry.gif

Any suggestions?

Suggest they come and go through the calendar for the next class they can accomodate themselves with...you did your part in scheduling and things happen in life...it's up to them to fit themselves into the scedule.

There is nothing you can do about what happened. You did what you could to try to help them out on other nights. I have had a problem before
I bent over backwards to accommodate but no luck. I just told them when I held another class they can come to it at no additional charge.
If they are your friends they should be understanding.
Good Luck

I really love doing this class but sometimes I have to wonder icon_eek.gif

I must be on the mean side... I say that they were not trying to help you help them and they just want to complain. screw em'. you were being nice and you have a life besides just teaching a class on the side, they have to respect this. hopefully they will come to their senses and just go in early or stay a little late next week.

I hope so. The one lady kept saying " we have all our stuff ready to go" and we have to work tomorrow.

You would think I would be use to this by now..........." Customer Service is my life icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I agree with the othe entries... I would allow them to attend a future scheduled class at no x tra charge in the next 3 months, but to commit to which class so you know there will be enough room for the others that sign up.... or come 30 minutes early or stay 30 minutes late!

southernbelle, I would not feel bad if I were you (unless it was you who turned the electricity off for the whole city icon_lol.gif - lol). I can't believe these 2 people are not understanding! You and everybody in the class "had their stuff all ready!" There are some people who just think about themselves!! ARGHH Take a deep breath and don't even think about those 2!!

As far as all thier stuff ready, tell them to pop it in the freezer and they can use it next week. I have had similar things happen to me, and i would push the class back a week, but not all stores can accommadate like that.

Shoot... when I took my Wilton 1 course the instructor didn't even show up for the last class! They should be glad that you were trying your best to accomodate them, the ingrates! Tell them that they can make up the second class with the rest of their class or wait until the next series of classes and start again. Like you are to blame for acts of God!

I can feel your pain.... My first class as a instructor about mid way through the class the lights went out except for 1 overhead. Well I told them we could go home and reschedule or they could just sit there and continue to listen to me cause that did not take to much light. We stayed and the lights came back on just as class was over. If I can make it through that I guess I can make it as an instructor LOL....

You can only do what you can do and the rest is up to them!!!

Good job!!

I once taught part of a class with flashlights as their was a storm that knocked the power out. The students knew it wasn't my fault and they wanted to stay and do what we could do.

I've had to reschedule classes before. Since the classroom in our store is usually full every night I usually push my class back to the next week. Their cakes can be frozen (I usually suggest this) and their icing will be okay until the next week.

The students that couldn't make it can always come sit in the next time you do the class. You tried to accomidate them, even suggesting they come early the next week, but you can't not always make everyone happy. And you have to do what is best for the class as a whole. Don't feel bad. It is not your fault you didn't have power, nor is it your fault that they can't come tomorrow night nor early next week.

The WMI Yahoo E-Group is a great place to ask question like these. icon_smile.gif
