im sure this is a dumb question, but.... can i lay the cake straight onto the cardboard plate for stacking? or do i need to cover them up? They are bought cardboard plates. I usually cover the very bottom cake w/freezer paper.

also, is it best to slice the tops of the cakes to make them flat/straight? I usually wind up w/a lump and sometimes cracks. when placing the second tier on top of the bottom cake it's not flat and there's gaps. I use flower nails for a heating core but still doesnt help much.

A paper plate (even covered) will not be able to support the weight of another cake/s in a tiered/stacked construction.

For comprehensive cake baking and decorating help, please see tiered/stacked cake super thread:
(Also has filling info, how much batter to use and how long to bake at what temp., etc.)

I use uncovered cardboards and straws for dowels all the time... 193 wedding cakes strong. For heavier cakes, I will double or triple the boards (glue em).

When you say "plates" you're really referring to cardboard cake circles, right? I use mine uncovered al the time on top of an SPS plate.

yes cardboard circles. what is a SPS plate? I want to do a two tier stacked cake. was curious if i can use the cardboard circle w/o covering it up and use it for the top cake, and lay it on the bottom cake w/dowels, etc.
thnx

There's been a fairly vigorous discussion in multiple threads about SPS. You might want to do a search rather than rehashing it all out.
