Just came from Sams. I saw a marble with white icing sheet cake with a name on it. 26.00 dollars and it had a big crack down the middle and the icing was not smooth at all. Doesn't it amaze you that people will pay for that but they balk at or prices!!!!!! The old saying----you get what you pay for!!!!! lol

yep, I am with you. I get a pit in my stomach when someone says, "I normally get cakes from Sam's, but thought I would check your too......" It's a form of art that some people never will get..........

hey guys not that its that upsetting, but you might want to be mindful of what you say, yes that cake shouldn't have been put out but not all of us that work for sam's club or other such bakeries put out subpar cakes, so just make sure your considerate, i totally know where you guys are coming from about what some people expect, but most of the time they just need to be educated about the difference. thanks julia

Around here the level of attention paid to the decoration depends on the person (not the store) that did the cake. I've seen some great cakes but I've also seen some real messes. I imagine that's how it is everywhere.
I just lost what could have been one of my few paying jobs to the local grocery store (initials GE) because of pricing. I'm frustrated that they can manage to put out such an inexpensive cake but what's even more frustrating is that their product was absolutely delicious! I MUST have their BC recipe!

you might not be able to get their recipe but check and see if you can purchase their buttercream, a lot of people here on cc purchase sam's buttercream and add their own flavors. thanks julia

Thanks, Julia. I do plan on purchasing BC from Sam's the next time I'm out that way. I figure @ $26, it's worth checking out. As far as getting GE's "recipe" ... I called their bakery to compliment them and ask what type of BC recipe they used. It was very creamy, dense and had a great taste. The woman told me to hold on then returned to the phone and said "It's just a white BC" which makes me think they purchase it premade (hopefully from SC). They do sell it by the quart, but it's extremely expensive if you buy it that way ... especially when I rarely get reimbursed for supplies.

I got a little mad this weekend. I did my first Penguin cake for VBS. It's in my pics. There are a few thing I would have done different but for my first cake like that, I was pretty proud of myself. It was a 2 layer 14" square with a 6" square on top for the slide. It served 120 people. A lady came up to me that supposedly decorates cakes and said, "wow, you'd probably charge about $50 for that cake if you did it for someone, wouldn't you?" Since we were in church, I politely said, "if you went to a custom bakery, they'd charge you at least $200 for it." I wanted to smack her!!!

The sad truth is that Sam's and Wal Mart can charge a very low price for their cakes. A lady at Sam's bakery told me that the cakes come in already baked and frozen. They basically, frost them, put a border on them and stick a kit on them. How easy is that and they are pretty good.

Yeah, in some ways it is depressing that they can do it so cheaply and Sam's and Costco cakes are actually good. But at the same time, my family has bought them for years for big gatherings and it's nice that they are so inexpensive. Because I sell cakes, I'm very glad that there are people who are willing to pay so much for cakes and I can see how it would be annoying for them to assume you'd do it for so much less, but some people just don't have the money for that kind of thing (if I didn't decorate cakes, I'd go to the grocery, I'm poor!!), and others just don't understand the level of artistry that goes into them. I guess I just see it from both sides.

Juledcakes,

I'm sorry if you were offended. I have a cousin that is a supervisor for Sam's club. So I in no way was knocking you or my cousin. I was just stating that, is that person chooses to take that cake and pay for it, then he or she got what they paid for. Would you send out a cake with a crack and a cr@#
icing job done? There isn't a person on CC that would send a cake out like that. So, again if it offended you I am sorry. I was just stating a fact.
A cr@##@ cake, you get what you pay for

I knew exactly what I was saying.
