I am new to decorating but i am breaking my back leaning over my kitchen counter...I know part if it is just how long it takes me to do stuff cause I am new, but I was wondering what works best? I have heard so much negative about the tilting cake turntable (even this morning on a forum) so I know that is out....but how does everyone do it?

I sit at my kitchen table to decorate. I stood at the counter for awhile, but it broke my back too.

We have a wooden lazy susan on our table that holds the napkins, salt & pepper, suguar, and stuff like that. When I go to decorate I put a piece of gripping shelf liner down, then take my 12" pan and turn it over on the lazy susan. Then, I just set the cake I am working on there and it works great. icon_smile.gif

AmyKay, I think I have heard of others using the wooden Lazy Susan....I am going to have to keep my eye out for one.

I have tried to sit at my kitchen table, but i end up on my knees leaning over the cake again (so it ends up being about the same)...

I would love some more suggestions too... I am too full of nervous energy while decorating to sit at all. I would also end up on my knees leaning over the table.

I got some fake Crocks to try out, haven't worn them yet.

I thought someone suggested a bar stool at the counter?

Any more ideas?

Bump.

Czyadgrl....I just dont think I can sit....perhaps its just me being so nervous....I am contemplating trying to use a small bucket or something so that my cakes sit a bit higher on my counter....

I really like the metal turntable (wilton or ateco). That will lift it several inches off the counter. It spins very nicely also. I also sit at the table while decorating, but am starting to use the counter now. I just don't have any counters without cabinets overhanging them.

Right now I have the short/amost flat wilton plastic turntable.
I really like it, except I'm still hunching over, bending down to see the sides of the cake.

I don't know that the 8ish inches higher a raised turntable is would help THAT much... maybe I just have to get used to it!

I got my wilton turntable at michael's with a 40% off coupon. The retail price pretty much anywhere is 59.00. But I think it's definitely worth it -- especially at almost half the price. I used a similar one for 5 yrs decorating cakes at Baskin Robbins.

I have the Wilton Plastic turntable and that works fine for me.

In order to save my back and my feet while decorating i bought bar stool at a garage sale for a couple bucks. I sit high enough in that that i usually don't need to lean over my cakes anymore.

I was thinking about buying a pair of crocks but when i mentioned it to dh he thought it was a bad idea. They are just plastic and I don't quite get how these shoes give any support. Plus wouldn't your feet get very sweaty and gross if you aren't wearing socks?

I usually stand up by the kitchen counter using my wooden
Lazy Susan that I bought at IKEA here in Sacramento..
It was only $5.00, very good quality though. Sometimes I sit by the dinner table, with my feet up on the chair next to me, or across from me.

I can be do this for 5 hrs
