I was reading a thread about piping and which tips to use and was struck by a comment about "visual learning". How true. I am one of those people who have to see something to be able to "get it". Obviously I am not alone.

That is why I appreciate the tutorials on this site. I need to see what someone means. How to hold a tip..what motion to use..etc. I buy videos and DVDs so that I can actually watch someone do something.

So if I pm someone with a question and then pm again for clarification it is not because I am dense it is just because I cannot visualize what the instruction might be. (That is my story and I am sticking to it) icon_lol.gif

So keep those tutorials coming!!!!! thumbs_up.gif

Thank you for bringing up this topic. This was a subject of discussion at a sugarpaste (gumpaste) flower class I attended over the past few weeks. The woman who was my workspace partner was complaining that there were no instructional hand-outs given to us, so we could work on the flowers at home. I had to privately and quietly tell her that learning sugarpaste flower-making is easier to learn via the visual-hands-on methods. I also had to remind her that she was the only participant not taking any notes when the instructor demonstrated the different steps in the technique.

I am definitely more of a visual learner as well. I love the tutorials and taking classes. I can read instructions 50 times and still not quite get it, but if I see it once, I can usually copy. I appreciate everyone who takes the time to post tutorials!

I remember the first time I was trying to make a parchment cone for royal icing.

I read the directions numerous times and messed around with the parchment. I can remember being so frustrated I cried over it.

So I searched the net and finally found step by step instructions, with pictures and was able to make one.

I know this sounds ridiculous but that is what I am talking about. Once I see something I can do it. But if all I have are written directions..no picture of what I am supposed to do, I am lost. icon_cry.gif

I am visual hands on. Reading instructions are okay to a point, but I really prefer having someone show me in front of my face (or video). Some people do actually work better reading instructions and not going by visuals. I have had some students learn techniques before I teach them just by reading the instructions and they sometimes have a tough time comprehending when I show them. Everyone is a different type of learner so that is why a good instructor will have hand out instructions as well as visual hands on--to accomodate the different learning types.

I can totally relate. When making royal icing flowers in one of my Wilton classes I just couldn't get the written directions. "hold the bag at such and such angle, then swirl left, blah, blah, blah." It wasn't until I said "show me" that I got it. I felt like an idiot because I couldn't understand the written directions. They just didn't make sense to me.

I'm a visual learner too. I can read instructions from a manual, but the pictures always make things so much easier to comprehend. Even when I get ideas for cakes, I draw them out. It's much easier for me to remember what I wanted to do by looking at my sketches. Just always the way I've been....

Definately visual here. I only buy books with pictures because just directions are useless to me.

I can usually figure it out from a picture, but I love step by step directions.

oh I'm visual too! But I need instructions as well! I hate when you get a piece of furniture or something and the only instructions are a picture.... what the crap?! How the heck am I supposed to figure that out? But I LOVE step by step stuff - and it's so hard to find. Sometimes people leave out a step b/c they think it's self explanatory - and sometimes it's not!!! I've also had this problem with trying to teach myself graphic design - to the point that I haven't done any in awhile b/c I got so frustrated w/ how my stuff didn't match the stuff in the book even though I was completely following the directions...... anyway me too! I'm in the same boat!
