I am going to try to take on a huge cake for my husband's grandpa's 80th B-Day. Not necessarily a huge cake, but for a huge amount of people...150 people, give or take a few. I was thinking about an open book cake with a picture of him on one side, and some text about his life on the other page.

I am fairly new to decorating, so I don't want to do anything too out of my league. Will this be too much for me?

I'm not sure if I'm too crazy about edible images, but how would I do that if I went that route? Can I order them?

How about text on the other page? How would I do that? Here is a link to one that I have found that I like.

I like that it seems to have some dimension to it.

I don't think that this would feed 150. Ahhh...I've never done anything like this. Where do I begin?

I need your help! Any ideas?

I don't know anything about serving sizes, but if the book cake is not enough you could always pop it on top of a sheet cake to get more servings. Also, for the edible images some grocery stores will let you purchase them from the bakery, you just take the picture down and they scan it and print it out. If you went the edible image route, you could print something out on your computer as far as text goes and get that done on an image as well.
I did a cake for my grandma's 70th bday that had pics of her during several stages of her life, and that was a big hit. Everyone loved looking at the pictures. It's in my pics.

That's a great cake, and would be really neat for an 80th birthday. I believe this book cake takes 2 cake mixes, which translates (IMHO) to approximately 40ish servings, so you are oh, about 110 short! You could do some sheet cakes to go with it. Maybe you can put it on a full sheet cake, but you will still be a little short.........I am sure someone else here can give you better suggestions though! icon_smile.gif

Crystalina,
LOVE that cake! Hmmm...now I think I may want to go the tiered route instead!?!?! I've NEVER done a tiered cake though. Your's is so elegant, yet fun. Oooh, you got me excited now. I do think I would do all bc...not fond of fondant. I may have lots of questions!

Thanks ladies!

I would be so happy to help you with anything I can! I had never done one before either, that cake was a joint project with my cousin, who HAS done tiered cakes before. I think it's much easier than it seems, though. Do you have time to practice?
