When making a stacked cake, is there a rule of thumb to use as far as what sizes of pans should be used? I have an 8" square pan, what other sizes should I buy to make my cake look proportionate? 10", 12", 6"....I have no clue! How much cake should be showing under each layer?

thanks!

At least 2" smaller/bigger than the next tier. It will depend on how many servings you will need.

The top tier on my cakes usually starts at 6" and depending on the number of servings, I usually go 6-9-12 or 6-10-14.

The general rule of thumb in my older cake books is 4" difference but people don't follow that so much any more. Most of the time you see at least a 2" difference.
