I am going to be making a beach themed birthday cake for next sunday. I already know that I am making the sand castle shaped bundt cake. I will also be making a filled cake. I am going to decorate the filled cake like the beach and the ocean. I have questions....

1. How should I "marry" the two so they look like they are on the same level. I want the castle to look like it is on the beach with the water encroaching. My filled cakes are usually about 4 inches, or so, high.

2. Should I bring the water down over the sides of the cake. I am thinking the water will actually be at one end.. beach in the middle.. sand castle at the other end.

3. What do you think is the easiest way to get that wave wash effect.. you know how the water crashes on the shore kind of thing icon_confused.gif Or should I just have a "calm sea" icon_surprised.gif

Thanks for any input you can give thumbs_up.gif

does then other cake have to be a round or square traditional filled tier?

I ask as, if you did a filled sheet cake instead, you'd have plenty of room to put the castle at one end and do beach/ocean or even plop it dead center and have it look like it was a little island in the middle of the ocean (like the castle in france)

I was trying not to give them TOO MUCH cake.. There will also be cupcakes with chocolate shells on them for the kids. I am hoping to keep the filled cake on the smaller side. My original thought was to use the sheet cake.

ok then...

castle cake on box to raise to required height to butt up against OR be in the middle of a cupcake cake made to look like beach and ocean.

shells can still be strewn across the beach area.

I have done several "beach" cakes over the years, and I usually ice half the cake with a golden color for the sand and the other half with white, on top of whitch I "smear" turquoise blue to indicate the foamy water. I use a tip 21 or 22 to swirl up the waves at the edge of the sand and sometimes to make incoming waves. Your Sand castle could go on the other end away from the beach. I just bought a sandcastle bundt pan I want to use in just the way you are going to do it.
Have a look at this "beach" search page from my website (ignore the beachball, it has "beach" in it too apparently icon_wink.gif )

On this page the beach is bevelled, and the water is iced/decorated the same as the others:

SugarFrosted,

Your cakes are so cool. You really have mastered the art of the ocean on your cakes. Very, very impressive!!!

I made a cake with the castle bundt and put a 4" tier underneath, covered with marbled fondant and sand on the cake board and some fondant sandals. There is a picture on my photos that were made in the process. I finished the cake with some crystalized sugar in clear and some flags in fondant from the turets. I used the wilton print impression to spell Ventura. You may get some ideas of how to adapt.

It is in my photos, a work in progress rather than the final cake. The final cake came in 3rd at the Ventura County Fair this weekend!

I have no idea if this is even on target, but could you carve a little arc out of the filled cake so that you can slide the bundt cake in and have it be right up against it? Then, the filled cake could be entirely water, with the waves coming up and washing onto the sandcastle? The way I'm envisioning it, half of the bundt pan would be nestled in so you could have white, foamy waves creeping up the bottom of it.
