What do you usually use for a base on square cakes? Someone told me to go a hardware store and ask for a sheet a plywood (Cut to size).
Any other ideas.

The cake is a 10" and 6" tier.

I get large sheets of MDF from the hardware store and cut them to size myself. They come in different thicknesses and work out quite cheap (about $1 or so per cake!)

I use foamcore from Michael's. It comes in 2 thicknesses. For your 10" cake, 1/2" thick foamcore and for the 6" tier, 3/16" thick foamcore.

They're about 1/2 inch thick reinforced cardboard and come already covered in foil. They come in either silver or gold. Very lightweight and very strong. And very pretty. I use them under all cakes--even 6 tier wedding cakes. I can carry several tiers stacked on one. As I said, very strong.

Where can I find the english style cake drum?

Can I cut the foam core myself?

You can cut foam core to any size and shape you want with an exacto knife. A heated exacto knife makes the job even easier.

Foam core comes in 20"x30" sheets.

English style cake drums can be ordered from pretty much any online cake supplies store or purchased at most of my local shops. I typically order from CK Products and BakeryCrafts. If you're not licensed, then CK is your option.

I go to a home improvement store and get a ceramic floor tile. They cost less than $1.50 are food safe, don't need covered, and won't bend. You can get them in any square size up to 18 inches.

I hot glue a piece of card board on the bottom so if I am scooting it around it won't scratch my table.
