I do cakes for my living with my Mom, all year round. Summer of course is where the money is made and seems to carry us the rest of the way through the year. I have a home based business, in a back room (that used to be my bedroom as a child!) with seperate entry, sink and 2 refridgerators. We use the room as our frosting making, gum paste flower forming, decorating cakes area, the baking is done in the kitchen in a convection oven. We registered with the BBB and we were inspected by them, and have our business license for the state also. We have been in business since 1993, but officially licensed since 1997 when we came back from Wilton in Woodridge. This weekend seems to be the one to kill me as I feel like I just started doing cakes with all the things going wrong! UGH! This really works for me, since I have had 2 children over the course of the years and they are able to just come with and be at Gramma and Grampas house while Im working on cakes. Hope this helps!

I would love to hear more of this myself- so here's a bump!

I am a stay-at-home mom and am new at this and would love to be doing it full-time eventually.

I have a bakery and have been decorating for 35 years. I started out taking one Wilton course and self taught on the rest.

I don't do this for a living as I am a stay at home mom but I do get a couple of orders a week that helps feed the addiction.

I only do this part-time. Stay-at-home mom of 5 1/2 yr. old and 2 yr. old twins so I don't have as much time as I would like to do this. For now it's all word of mouth and that's fine with me. I might start thinking about doing some 'marketing' when school starts next month.

I also work part-time doing my 'office' job. I go in the office on Wednesday's and work evenings doing minimal paperwork.

Hi Danielle-

This is Cass from BC Roses 101 icon_biggrin.gif Check out my last pic posted and dont' laugh too hard when you see my end results. icon_lol.gif

Back to your question-

I just got a lucky break with doing my cakes... I do have a full time job working for our area hospital and that keeps me busy from 6am till 230 M-F. Although I'm lucky enough to work from home (Coder), my day is busy from the time I start working till it ends.... I have the 4yr. old twins that keep me going pretty much all the time.. I find the time to do my cakes usually after everyone is in bed.... It's all just been word of mouth, but I have to say I've been staying pretty busy... I'm just trying to stay busy enough to make up the difference in putting my kids in Preschool full time now instead of part-time...I really enjoy doing them (cakes), just wish I had more time instead of trying to run around crazy getting them done... I just need to pencil some time in for sleep... I never thought I would ever sell a cake to someone but the feeling is great when someone tells me how pleased they are with them.... Thanks for your help yesterday!

Cass

i do this for a living from my home. i am in jamaica, it seems like we are not too strict with things or i dont know if we are. icon_smile.gif i have been baking for about 11 years now. btw...home is still with my parents and siblings. house prices are different here. icon_sad.gif

at times when i get real busy its kinda difficult with 9 other people needing something/space in the kitchen. but it works.

I was a Costco decorator for 6 yrs and quit my job to decorate on my own in June I just finished a very hectic week 4 wedding cakes 4 other orders and baked for someone else 15 cakes in different sizes thank goodness my daughter was on vacation couldn't have done it with out her. Plus I gave her 2 wedding cakes to do I couldn't fit them in and she did a beautiful job. She can decorate too and has been watching me for years only thing she is really good at it could be better than me.

I decorate/sculpt cakes as my profession.
I went to culinary school back in 02 and started decoration in Jan of 03, I've worked in Santa Barbara, Napa and now I just started in Sacramento.

I decorate because its my passion but its now starting to become financially rewarding which is even better! All my hard work is paying off not just with money but the reputation I have built up for myself is the most gratifing thing....hands down!

Not me! I just do about 1-3 a week (sometimes more) by word of mouth. As far as making a living, it used to just put gas in my car ... now it can't keep up with the gas prices.

I'm just starting out and so far just doing it to feed my dh's sweet tooth! And for the birthdays of my children. When they are all in school I wouldn't mind doing it for a living but I'm so critical of myself not sure I would ever sell them or do it as a regular thing. I'm always harder on myself than necessary but it makes me so nervewracked I don't know if I could deal with the pressure! icon_rolleyes.gif I'm a goof.

Hi, anybody in FL that is doing this for a living?? I would love any advice in FL and the regulations? How hard is it as I hear you can not work from home, using your own kitchen (in FL). Please let me know if you have any info. Would love to do this full time but don't know where to start. Thanks!
