I just bought a new computer...Dell Dimension Desktop from WalMart.
I was so excited to be getting a new computer, faster processer, bigger hard drive, everything I ever wanted...or so I thought! It has Vista loaded on it from the factory. It is so different from my old computer, and I'm not sure if I like it (yesterday I offered to shoot it with a shotgun,
!) It is improving a little with time, it seems to be picking up speed as it "learns" where I frequent the internet-my Husband hasn't even touched it yet! I am unable to get my web browser to load with this computer and am having to get used to Internet Explorer being my default browser.
Anyone here having the same/similar issues?
glenda
I have it. But fortunately for me, my son-in-law is an IT guy for a major hospital system in town. I just gave him my credit card and told him to get me a computer from Dell. I have a wireless laptop with Vista and Microsoft Office 2007. He set everything up for me.
The only problem I have is when I save documents (bride's quotes and order forms) I have to make sure I save them in the '97 version. Otherwise when I email them out, unless the recipient has Vista and/or Office 2007, they won't be able to open them.
Otherwise no problems. I turned it on and took off!
I was so frustrated yesterday that I was ready to have Vista removed and put XP back on, until I read somewhere that if you do that, it can't support some of the drivers and programs that are factory installed.
I am not familiar with MS Office, I have heard about it, but don't know what it IS (is it another OS?) I have heard that there are some peoople that have opted to "segment" there hard drives so that they can run Vist and XP parrallel on the same computer, but I am not sure I want to devote that much hard drive to 2 OS's! Besides, I am not "computer savvy" enough to be confident in running both and knowing how/when to switch back and forth.
Thanks for the tip about saving the documents for emailing, I will have to keep that in mind! The document I use for orders is an MS Works spreadsheet (it figures the price for me on the order form...NICE!) I saved most of my documents from the other computer (it is set up as we speak on the kitchen table, lol, to "retrieve" any info I forgot to copy!) I have my stuff burned to disk and I was able to open and us a MS works documents from WIndows XP last night, but I have not tried the process in reverse, saving from Vista to view on XP I may try that later!
I am very interested in what everyone has to say, I still have not decided if I want to keep this computer or return it,
! It very difficult to decide when you both love and hate it at the same time. I'm coming around, but I just don't know if I can deal with the stress right now! I have no printers hooked up to it right now! My Lexmark is incompatible and they have made no Vista drivers for it to be upgraded, I have downloaded a driver for my Canon that I use for Edible Images-but I'm almost scared to know if it will truly work or not!
Thanks for letting me vent! ![]()
MS Office (Microsoft Office) is your Word processing, Excel, Powerpoint, etal programs. It took me awhile to get used to the Excel (I'm not a mouse person ... I'm a keyboard person ... so being forced to use a mouse to click on icons designed for the illiterate irritates the pi$$ out of me! I can't find sh** when I need a new function!). But as my kids say, I'm SLOWLY coming into the 21st century!
(My son ... who is also a computer genius... used to think his mom was pretty awesome. As a kid he would brag to his friends how his mom could maneuver thru windows without using a mouse! Wow! Now he's just exasperated with me!)
I have Vista on my laptop...I just got a series of updates from Microsoft and it kicked my internet out on my laptop somehow.
Grrrrrrrrr!
Vista is nice when it WORKS!
I do like XP myself...I have it on my hubby's laptop and at my work, so I'm used to using it.
I have Vista Home Basic...which to me is just a glorified Windows XP...much more color and few extra bells and whistles....but thats it. My husband had the Vista premium ...and hated it....he took it back to basic.
The only thing I find frustrating about my vista is that there are so many programs not compatiable with it....my itunes has trouble sometimes...yahoo messenger... and I cant get CAKE BOSS! ![]()
if your brand new computer is running slow it may be that you need to clean out a lot of the preloaded "crap" that comes on computers....it may not necessarily be vista thats slowing it down. ![]()
I have Vista Home Premium, and I have cleaned out some of the preloaded "crap". But it is still kind of hard for me to tell what is necessary and what's not! I really haven't tried to load anything on it yet. Luckily, I really don't use Yahoo Messenger that often.
I am getting a little more used to it now, but DH just got on for the first time a few hours ago, and he was not too thrilled with MY new toy! I am not at all technically inclined, and I'm sure I will catch on eventually, just like I did with Windows XP. I just don't know if the rest of my family feels the same way!
If anyone is interested, I have some great links to FREE MS training demos for Office 2007.
I am one of those "evil" IT people in charge of coordinating the roll out of Office 2007 to our entire company. We aren't touching Vista yet but I have gathered some info on it as a result of my natural curiosity. Vista, IMO, wasn't ready for prime time yet EXCEPT for the very basic Home User install which even has it's issues.
BTW, your customers will be able to open an 07 document even if they have 2003. It will just run in compatibility mode which means only the new stuff like Smart Art won't show up for them. They also could be prompted to install the compatibility tool. (Which will most likely be pushed out in a MS patch anyway very soon.)
I have it on my laptop which is about 3 months old. I had trouble figuring out where things were at first but now it seems fine to me. The biggest pain to me was that my email program wouldnt work with it (incredimail) and I had to fix a couple of my other programs to work with it. I still have trouble with itunes once in a while and the whole pop up for "allow" thing is annoying.
Well, I am now on day 14 with the new computer and Windows Vista. Luckily, it's a Dell, and I have been very friendly with Tech Support, LOL!
I am getting a little better a navigating my system. I have learned that Vista would prefer that I be on DSL/Broadband, and it is not "happy" with my dial-up connection. However, my Tech Support friends have helped me figure that problem out, I hope. (MY computer was trying to establish a new connection to the internet every time I logged on...at one point I had 11 individual connections on my sign-in.)
I love the changes in "Pictures", formerly "My Pictures" on the XP start menu. I love being able to edit pictures from there.
I have had to purchase a new printer to be compatible with this OS. Luckily, I was able to download a free driver from the Canon website for my edible image printer (I have a Canon Pixma iP1500). It is online and working great! I actually had to use it as my main printer for a few days while looking for my new printer. The one I wanted was not available at the Wal-Mart in my town, yeah-it's a one store little hole in the wall of a town! Now I just have to find somewhere convenient to by printer cartridges.
All said, I think we will survive the change, and I just can't take the computer back, I do love some of the features. I am still learning and I have a great deal more to figure out.
