I delivered my latest retirement cake at noon today (it's in my photos). Anyway, when I got there they were setting up in the courtyard of the Naval Hospital. There were two women in aprons there pulling food out of a van. They are a mother/daughter team who own a catering business locally. Anyway, I asked them where to set the cake and they were like "Did you make that?!" I said "Yes I did!" They said that it was beautiful. The mother asked me if I do wedding cakes/anniversary cakes and the like. I said that I did. She then asked me if I had a card. I went back to my car and got one for her and handed it to her and she was excited to see the wedding cake that I have as a pic on my card. They in turn gave me their card!!!
How cool was that!!!! I guess you had to be there but I was totally excited. I thought, they probably don't do cakes. They said they get asked all the time to do wedding/anniversary/shower cakes. I assumed that they didn't do cake, just the food food!! I got home and checked out their website and OH YEAH they do cakes and other desserts as well. I called and talked to the daughter and told her I checked out their site and mentioned their cakes. She said that they most often don't have time to do all the food for the catering AND decorate the cakes. She said that it takes a lot of detailed time to decorate a cake especially a wedding cake. She was referring to my experience in that remark.
I was just totally excited that they loved the design of the cake I made so much that THEY (the professionals) asked little ol' me for a card. I told her that I am not a business but just do this by word of mouth and that I have been doing this for six years but more vigorously for the last 10 months (wow has it been that long??) I mentioned repeatedly that I don't want to step on anyone's toes because I am not a business. They both agreed that everyone has to start somewhere. That's how they started and only recently moved into a larger location to where they can hire a few employees. The daughter said to me..."Just because you don't run a business doesn't mean you aren't a professional!" I was like ![]()

Definitely make up a small 4x6 'Brag Book' of your best cakes to leave with them!! That way they can show it to prostective customers when they refer people to you. You create beautiful cakes! It is hard to remember that we have a skill that is usually hard to come by, because here in our CC community we are surrounded by talented people. Out in the 'real' world, we are rare gems!
Good for you for stepping up to the plate, now don't forget to SWING!
congrats...i hope you get a lot of business from them. your cakes are very good. i need to put more time into mine...you have inspired me.

I'm nervous for what might happen. I'm going to ditch my youngest so I can go alone and be able to spend time inquiring about what they are looking for!!! This would be an opportunity so great!!! Even if it is on a part-time basis, I would be thankful for the opportunity and experience.
How many of us here on CC got a big break like that or something similiar. I'd love to hear those stories!!!

hi amy,
WOW. thanks for the compliment. I guess I am my worst critic. i need to get the roses down..i cant pipe one to save my life. thanks again amy.
You're funny!! ![]()
I piped 92 roses for the last wedding cake I did. I think it was about the 72 rose that I finally got it down pat! I still have yet to create the perfect piped rose. I can mold them fine with my hands but piping, I do have a long way to go!
Anyway, I love sharing my cakes with others and I just love getting inspiration from other decorators like yourself! Keep up the great work!!!
