I am working on a cake for tomorrow and I can't get my buttercream red. I keep adding red coloring and it is still orange. Can anyone tell me how to get a deep red?

Thank you

I hate red! You could try adding some pink to counter the orange-ness,

I did this and it worked. Yellow then orange then red. Watch out for the orange--you can read my post. And the longer it sat the deeper the red.

I made a batch of icing for the Elmo face cake pan. I used THREE jars of the Wilton no-taste red. I couldn't believe it took so much!!! I was shocked. I agree completely on leaving to sit for a while. It will darken. I had to leave my icing in the bowl for about 45 minutes. I left it in frustration, because I had used all my red. When I came back, it had went from a deep burgundy looking pink, to a PERFECT ELMO RED. I was really glad I waited, otherwise, I might have thrown it out!! I used a bit of lemon extract to cut the taste. It did not taste like lemon, but had a added a nice flavor to the icing.

i'm sorry for you right now b/c u'll have to use tons of red .
for the future make your bc about a week ahead of time and add red to it , i think adding a bit of burgandy makes it a bit deeper faster. but thats me i haven't heard of anyone else doing it . if u make it ahead of time u definitely won;t use the entire bottle of red coloring

for dark red, adding cocoa to your frosting will work wonders. My last cake was for my son's Tball team, which have colors red/black. I started with cocoa in the icing and then added red. It still took more than other colors but definitely didn't require 3 bottles of it! icon_razz.gif

If you want to see that cake, it's the most recent in my gallery.

I have been told that you can use red koolaid mix to put in your icing along with your coloring. It makes it bright red and doesnt leave a funny taste. I havent been able to try this yet. Maybe somebody could try this and let me know how it goes.
