Can you use any kind of wire to put decorative touches coming out of your cakes. And what weight is best? Any tips on using wire for decorative accents? Thanks

I use cloth colvered floral wire. The size/weight/guage depends on what you are trying to support. I have a range of sizes, from thick and sturdy to very very fine.

I only use Stainless steel wire after I wash it in hot soapy water or boil it to sterlize it. I can get it in different gauges as I need it.

As for what gauges to use for your decorations that will depend on what you want the effect to be, and how heavy your decorations are on it.

I don't like to use floral wire, copper, carbon steel, or other metals. As for the metals there are so many different ranges of metal that you can't be sure it is food safe. Stainless steel (even the low grades are still food safe) As for the floral wire, I haven't found anywhere it says it is food safe. Now just to clarify, These are personal preferences based on the knowledge I have of metals, and i'm not saying it is wrong to use b/c I know there are people out there who do. But my recommendation is Stainless steel.

I would also suggest to search the forums for "wire" as withen the last few months there have been multiple topics on this and varying opinions.

In a pinch I have gotten some Stainless steel crafting wire in the bead section (usually for bracelets)

But my main supply is work. I can get 1/16" or 1/32" thick wire about 30" long and straight..... And it is a grade of stainless used for food processing plants so I usually just wash it, but the wire I bought in the store I boil it to make sure it is clean.

I will have to see what it would take and how much it would cost to get some items set up... If I have enough interest.
