OK, so the theme is "A baby is brewing" and they are having a tea party baby shower. So I instantly thought of finally getting to do a teapot cake with a baby coming out of the top lid or something of the sort. Only problem is I don't think the sports ball pan that I would make it out of would feed the amount of people that will be there, around 20 or so. So I am thinking, should I still do the teapot cake but stack it on top of a say 10 inch round so there's extra cake? Any ideas would be helpful for the whole entire cake. It's for a baby boy and I am really nervous too about doing a fondant baby. Help! icon_cry.gif

large round or sheet cake as the table top

then decorate w/ cups and saucers, napkins

instructions on how to "brew" a baby -- customize these to boy or girl if known.

something like:

boy:
add one snip
two drops tincture of snail
brew for 9 months, stirring gently w/ puppy dog tail

I just did a tea party cake for my niece. It was just a round cake decorated in pink with lime green polka-dots - I know, totally inappropriate for a boy, but you could do that in any way you want. Then I did chocolate transfers of teapots and cups (and princesses and such). You could do the tea things with teddy bears, rubber duckies, rattles, etc. The inside was the checkerboard cake - pink and white. You could do blue and white. Just a thought.

See I don't think the sports ball pan would feed 20 people alone, so I was thinking of doing the teapot then putting it on top of a 9 inch round and decorate it like the teapot.

You could do cupcakes to look like teacups.

Here's an idea:
bottom cake is a stovetop- complete with elements (I think either gas or electric would both be fun to make lol). Copper teakettle (sports ball pan) on burner-hmm too bad you couldnt make steam somehow lol. Then have the baby poking its head out of the lid- like the lid is open a crack and the baby is in there. I think putting the teapot on the stove would make it more of a 'brewing' thing.
Or really corny LOL. You have the 'porcelain teapot' (sports ball pan) sitting there on your cakeboard. (big one) and some cupcakes (tea cups) quasi hollowed out with little gumpaste/fondant babies at the 'bottom' of each cup with a 'string' tied to each (like a teabag) - or you could do the tea(bab) bag inside the teapot and have it on a table like Doug suggested, with teacups and have the baby teabag 'inside' the teapot. Then of course on the label of the teabag you have to have boy or girl theme or name if they have it picked out. And you could make a MMF empty teabag package laying on the table with instructions. Or the whole box of teabags. with a label like Baby Boy Tea or something plus instructions

Oh wow oceanspitfire... those sound so adorable... I just don't think I have the time, patience, or ability or talent to do that. I already have a stacked cake I have to do that same day. I am not good with the whole sculpture thing so making the baby out of fondant is going to be a feat in itself. I wish I could do that idea though, could you imagine how freaking cute that would be?

You could just do a normal teapot but add the string from the teabag hanging from the lid. You could make a blue tag that says "baby boy brewed for 9 months!"

Then I would do cupcakes to increase the number of serves.

ok so why not simplify? (I understand about the doublefisting cakes thing- egads 24 hours is just NOT enough in a day for juggling everything. My days off from work I want to relax ON TOP of housecleaning I was too tired to do during the week, ON TOP of 2 cakes to do for next week to start on. hmmmm not possible LOL

ok so simplify: make a porcelain teapot, however you were going to make that with the sportsball pan. Have that sitting on the 'tabletop cake' and then you can make a couple of teacups out of cupcakes. Set those there as well, forget the gumpaste or fondant babies and also make a little box that the teabags come in and write 'baby boy tea' on it - maybe make the box light blue and paint on a little baby logo or something. So then you dont have to spend time molding anything. You were goingto do the teapot anyway right? so just have a string (real or edible of some kind) hanging 'out' of the pot, lid closed with the traditional little tea tag on it, That wouldnt be hard to make. (little baby logo painted on it or baby boy tea or something if you want or not bother.

good luck, cant wait to see what you do!

I have so much to take in and figure out and that's not even a cake I have to do til next week. But I do need to make the spout and lid and handle of the teapot this weekend so it dries in time, on top of the 2 cakes I have to do tomorrow... I know what you mean by not having enough time. I honestly don't remember the last time I got to just sleep in. Between cakes, work and this wedding I am in... ugh! It sux!

Good luck! You'll do just fine. Just dont bite off more than you can chew, eh? Make a list of everything that HAS to be done this week and put off things, such as errands or chores that will wait a day or two til the madness is over. I;m sure you know all this, just a reminder- try and consolidate errands you have to do and get whatever done at the same time or same day/afternoon etc to save time. Planning is good that way and doesnt always work but if you can foresee something you have to pick up then you can do that on the way home from work instead of making an extra trip, or if you get a lunchhour where you work, you can run some errands that are needed for this week/wedding thing and eat on the run (emphasis on eat on the run, cause ya need to eat lol)

Ok everyone! I just talked to the person that I am doing this cake for next Saturday and she said that we could do a teacup instead of a teapot on top of the cake. We were thinking of making a cup out of fondant and hope it dried in time and put the baby down in the cup sleeping. So I am definitely gonna have to do the 9" round cake... my question now is, does anyone have an idea on what to decorate the teacup and the rest of the cake like. The invite doesn't do me any help. It's for a boy so I am guessing to use green, blue and yellow for the colors... anyone have any creative ideas... help!!!

I did a teapot on top of a cake once. I did it from pressed sugar. I know they have a teapot chocolate mold also. I use a chocolate mold to make my 3d tea pot. You can see it in my other competitions gallery on my website.
How big is the tea cup?

well since the teacup is now the centerpiece of the cake and there won't be a teapot and it has to hold a baby at the bottom of the cup, it will probably be pretty big without it looking too much like a coffee cup instead.

You could mold the coffee cup from the sports ball pan from chocolate or even make it in pressed sugar. If you do not have the sports ball pan you could use a rounded bowl.

yeah i got the sports ball pan cuz i thought that is what i was going to make the teapot cake from. my biggest thing now is what design to use. i was thinking something like sleepy time since the baby will be sleeping... moons and stars... something maybe like that.

I am not sure if you have family like me but if my inlaw's see's anything "cake" the buy it fo me.
Anyway, my mother in law bought me the Betty Crocker Bake in fill.
and I actullay used it to make a Violet Beauregard Cake ( Willy Wonka)
I made 2 1/2 round side which each side was 1 bx. I think. so this would be enough for 20 poeple. I think you can buy the pan at Target. Hope this helps.

ohhh socake, those are adorable!

Hey how about painting/drawing little storks around the side of the cup
or a babypin border? or little booties or baby handprints (I've used them on MS Publisher- they're in the newsletter templates-great for kids themes)
or go to firstimpressionmolds.com to the baby section and click on those to get some ideas- really cute- littel bottles and bibs and loads more

I made a christening cake that I stuck royal icing saftey pins and stars on. You could do something similar with the tea cup on top instead of the bear. Here is the link!
