I need to make a graduation hat and diploma. Should I use fondant or gumpaste. It is due July 6. Alvarez.bean has told me how to do the diploma transfer. (Thank you so much) I'm just not sure what to use.

TIA

Lu

You could use either one... gumpaste will dry faster and harder though. A lot of people on here, myself included, use a 50/50 mixture of both. HTH icon_smile.gif

Is the 50/50 edible?

I always use the fondant with gumtex. Works really well.

Good luck!

I made the mortar board out of gumpaste, and the cap part out of a 4" round cake. Are you planning on covering the cap cake in fondant or making it out of gumpaste too? Just wondering because I had a HECk of a time trying to cover such a small cake in fondant. Kept draping on me.

I was going to try to cove a bowl to make the bottom part of the hat. What do you think?

I don't think so, since it dries so hard.

I would cover a bowl with 50/50 or gumpaste. I think fondant would be too soft. It will be really hard, but they don't have to eat it if they don't want. There should be plenty of cake for eating!

I'm so sorry. Are you talking about smoothing the fondant around your hat cake, or the gumpaste around a bowl?? Either way I am with you. I think it's because it's such a small object. After many tries I said that if I ever did it again I would first wrap a piece around the hat, then add a top piece. Then there would be no draping and it would be super smooth. Your mortar board will cover the fact that it's two pieces.

Good luck.
