The last time I used luster dust, I mixed it with butter extract. I used a small amount and added the dust...it was fine and I got one thing done, and the liquid was dry!
So, I kept adding the extract like every other piece I decorated. Is their a way to keep it wet the WHOLE time?
I have some 50th cookies coming up.....I need gold!
Thanks for your help.
I don't know if the butter extract has alcohol in it, but you need something with alcohol in it. I use vodka for everything I paint (gel paste color or luster dust). It dries really well on the finished piece and the alcohol will evaporate so it won't hurt it to put it on the cake to eat. Try that and see if it helps.

i used lemon extract on mine and never had a problem..if it gets dry than add a drop of lemon..i use fresh lemons..cheap and handy..
I would think the reason is the evaporaton. Keep a lid or cover on the dish unless you're actually dipping the brush in, that should minimize the evaporation. And I don't think there'd be any harm in just adding more as needed.
Butter extract doesn't have enough natural alcohol in it to keep the mixture wet.I use vodka. You can everclear which is a high alcohol clear liquid found in some decorating stores but not all...and you can use lemon oil extract but be careful about the color because the darker the yellow the chances it will bleed through the luste dust.Lemon oil has a higher alcohol content than most other extracts.I add more vodka when the mixture becomes thicker.
