Those of you (you know who you are...) who make spectacular, flawless cakes....I am wondering what they look like before you add all the finishing touches. Are they really flawless from start to finish or are there any imperfections hidden there by ribbons, borders, flowers, icing. I would be so grateful if I knew that they dont have to be perfect when you peel off the ribbons etc!! I am so critical of my work now and I really want to know what I need to work toward. I dont like people to watch me decorate because there always seems to be a stressful minute where I am like "this is going to look like @#%$! But I usually pull it out in the end!! HA HA!

Pinkbunny! Thank you! I just looked at your photos and your cakes are wonderful! I have one saved to my faves (yellow and pink cake with bee) and I see another I want to add now (cars) It makes me feel better!

No such thing as flawless...though it's fun to try!

And yes, definitely don't feel bad--there is always (to me) a definite "front" and "back" of my cakes...

Hmmmm.....

I don't think she's talking to me...... icon_lol.gif

But just for giggles, I strategically hide my screwups with pretty accents or edible glitter.

I don't think anyones cakes are flawless. Especially if its a real cake.

The best you can do is take a couple of steps back and see where to put that flower to hide that dent or whatever.

I keep striving for a perfect cake too. I just tried making Pinkbunny's pink and green cake with the bee for my DD 1st b-day. While making I was really dissapointed in how it was turning out, my lines were far from perfect. Anyway, after I got all the flowers on and the border I thought it didn't look half bad.

I think you should pose this question to sugarshack. Her cakes ARE perfect.

I'm new to this cake decorating hobby, but I sure am glad to see that I'm not the only one who strategically places things to cover up flaws!!!

Even mother nature has flaws in her work. It's inherent in life.

There is definately a front and back to all my cakes. When watching the Cake Challenges on Food Network.....you can see the decorators getting frustrated sometimes about the slightest imperfection. We are our own worst critic!!! Cornelli lace is a great way to hide some imperfections. Ribbons whether satin or fondan is another great way to hide that infamous pleat in fondant! We all come up with different tricks to hide what we consider imperfections.

There is no perfect cake. Even in Food Network challenge cakes. You can see dings and dents. Any Cake I do there will always something I would change or want to do different. Real cake or fake it is all the same to me.I still can have flaw on a show cake too! It happens even to the best of them!

I am so glad to see all of these "imperfect" comments. I am doing my first wedding cake in October, and I am pertrified of imperfections. Especially after looking at some of the pics of the wedding cake contest going on! Everyone I've made a cake for raves about it, but I see all the mistakes and imperfections. I know how you feel, merissa.

Those little flaws and imperfections are what make our cakes unique and make us better at what we do. It also makes us better to be able to hide them! No one is perfect, not even Mother Nature!

usually overall I like the way my cakes turn out, and I am definitely getting a lot better each time. But I do find myself staring at each bump, ding, dent! I know nobody but me really notices them...so I guess that helps. I just finished my son's 1st birthday cake for his party tomorrow. I am really excited to post my picture because I like the way it turned out. It really turned out pretty much how I had envisioned it. I havent taken pictures yet, but I will post it tomorrow. I cant wait to hear what you all think!!

I always see imperfections in my cakes no matter how big or small. In fact I usually end up putting a finger mark or worse in the cake when trying to pick at a small imperfection. I am fussing with the cake until the moment it leaves my sight and then it still seems imperfect to me.

On one of the cake challenges, the judge pointed out that the decorater had some fingermarks in her border!

Obviously not even they are perfect.

My cakes are so not perfect, and I use to spend hours and hours trying and the good ole DH would say its fine leave it, no one will notice. After alot of frustration I started creative decorating to hide flaws its way more fun than spending hours trying to fix them.

I figure...it's not about the mistakes you make, but how you cover them up! A few creative touches can turn a sloppy cake into a "perfect" one icon_smile.gif

So true, I remember Celebration Cakes Challenge and one of the ladies was taking off the fondant to redo because she was upset at the horrible job her partner did. Also, after looking at some of the other cakes that were finished in fondant I thought "maybe I'm not so bad at fondant after all" I always assumed that if you got to that level they would be PERFECT, and theirs were not. They had creases, gaps, you name it.

1 of the things my wilton instructor told me was:

before you add decorations decide which side of the cake is the front and which is the back. you have to decide this before placing roses or writings.

i also read on here once that its not how much flaws there are its how good you cover them up. also someone said that they are great at hiding the flaws thats why their cake looks flawless.
