i'm not a professional baker and just yesterday i delivered my first official big (well for my experience) wedding cake. for a friend. i was so surprised how there can be such a bride who doesn't really care about details for her own wedding. 6 days before the wedding i still didn't get anything confirmed -- size, design, flavor! and i couldn't contact her at all! i knew i had to start and i knew they didn't get anyone else to make the cakes. so i wrote her an email saying i'll go ahead and do what i think she wants. she better call me right away in case i'm doing something wrong. as i think you all would understand, i was going crazy with all the decisions! the things one would do for a friend. as it turns out, she was that type of person -- doesn't matter what it looks like. she's tasted my cakes of course which is why she asked me to make her wedding cake. i'm flattered but oh my stress!!! to make it all worth it, i didn't cringe when her sister (who was paying) asked for the price. you see, i'm the type who's embarrassed when asked how much. she didn't bat an eyelid and gave me the money. (and i worried about that too!)
i wrote above testimonial as a reply to another post but i mean it for almost everyone here as well -- i'm actually envious of all you bakers/decorators who can walk away from a cake order. i suppose i could too, but my low self-esteem is using this cake thing to boost my ego. afterall, i'm the only one in my circles of friends who can make such cakes. i'm sorry if this is too much soul-baring for some of you to stomach but i wanted to share my feelings too. i think noone else can understand like CCers can.
so you got through it, and you are non the worse for all of the experience.....
Cheer up.....you will find that there are many people out there that will take you up to the highest mountain and down to the lowest valley with their response to your work. The IMPORTANT thing is that you remain TRUE to yourself, give your BEST EFFORT at all times, and continue to give yourself the credit that is due you. Honest people are hard to find....you second guess yourself because you probably seek perfection, and like most 'artists' who are successful, you try to better yourself each time.....WELL DONE!!!
I just want to say that I think you have very pretty cakes. you should be very proud.
I agree 100% with the pp!!! You should not feel guilty for charging what your cakes are worth=) You make beautiful cakes and people will pay for such beautiful cakes=) Hopefully with time you will recognize it and be able to not bat an eye when quoting prices, and even say NO when you need to=) Jen
it feels relieving being able to share here on CC and even better receiving such supportive replies! thank you all so much! i will take your words of wisdom and try my best to apply it. you're all great inspirations with your talent on cakes, ethics in business, and support as "friends."
