You can get the luster dust and turn them into a paint. They look great on cakes. Can be used on buttercream or fondant or even chocolate.

Don't use water. Use a clear extract (vanilla or lemon), vodka, gin or everclear. Those work the best. Also, when you are looking for the dusts, be sure not to get the silver or gold highlighter dusts. While they give a superb gold and silver look, they are not edible and should only be used on pieces that will not be eaten. But, the plain old gold and silver luster dusts are fine and will do a great job. Good luck!

Hi there, I'm new to Dust luster, but I've seen so many beautiful cakes on this site that made me want to try them... can any one give me any pointers on how to apply them to my cakes?? In the dust form and "paint" form? I understand you have to use vodka or clear extracts but I just don't know how to apply... help please!
Thanks so much!!

Oh, one more thing, I forgot... what is the difference between Luster Dust, Dusting Powder, Pearl Dust, Petal Dust, Sparkle Dust and Highlighers? TIA!!

I like going here for explanations: http://sdbytracy.com/dusts.htm

With the petal, luster, pearl, disco (pixie) and highlighter dusts, you can apply wet (use the extracts or alcohol) or dry. Use a paint brush to do either type of application. I even use a blush brush to do large areas.

Shimmer dusts or just the plain ol cake sparkles cannot be mixed with liquid as they will clump and make a nasty mess. You can just prinkle them on BC iced cakes or, for fondant covered ones, just spritz with a little water and the sprinkle on the shimmer dust.

Disco and pixie dusts are like real glitter and are REALLY sparkly--I love those.

The highlighters are definitely not edible and should only be used for decorative pieces that will not be eaten.
