I don't want to insult anyone but I HATE those topsy turvy cakes lol They look like a big mess (sorry) I dont know if its because of all the colors or stuff on them (and there seems to be a lot of stuff) or if it is because they are not symetrical or what but whenever I see them I just seem to think yuk. And there just doesnt seem to be any ryme or reason to them. I just see why anyone would want one. Oh boy I hope I'm expressing myself well and not insulting anyone but it was just my opinion and wanted to see if any one else felt the same.

I don't know why anyone would want one for a wedding cake, just my opinion. To be honest, I find them a little freaky-looking myself. Very "Alice in Wonderlandish". This coming from the Disney girl! ![]()
But I do find that the ones people have made are done very well.
I love them... but everyone has different tastes.
I personally have never made one. It's a matter of personal taste. We don't all share the same personal taste.

I edited my post because I think I was being rude. I'm sorry.
I think they are super. I would love to try one. I think it's because they seem to be falling yet they are not that is what makes people like them. They wonder how in the world were they done.
I love the bright colors too. I think they are fun and yes a bit Alice in Wonderland.
For a wedding cake I think they are nice if they are done Colette Peters style where it's a soft color and not the big bright ones.
But if it were my wedding I would not want one. For a birthday I love them.

I think the reason for Darlene's post was to see if anyone else dislikes topsy turvy cakes. I don't think she's insulting anyone. Isn't it alright to express your opinion about cakes on a cake site?
I think people like them (me included) because they are "whimsical". Kinda like how cartoons are whimsical. And because they appear to defy gravity. They have "Wow! factor". People look at them and think "Wow! How is that not falling over". Just my take on it.

I don't think any insult was taken...I hope not anyway. Personally, I kinda like them. I think they're different and that's what makes them interesting. I would love an excuse to try one! I just think they add a bit of 'fun' to an otherwise normal cake. To each their own! ![]()
I don't think she was insulting anyone's work....she doesn't perfer this style of cake. There have been plenty of posts about people who do not like sheet cakes!! But that doesn't mean they are insulting anyone's work or talent....just a personal style prefence.
I personally love these cakes...and for the reasons she stated she doesn't like them!!
I love that they are all over the place...literally!! Odd shapes, lots and lots of colors, and lots and lots stuff!! just plain fun to me!!
sometimes it's nice to get out of the box and away from the traditional!! I can't wait to do one myself!
I think if they are done well, they can be very cool....however....I do think that they are a fad that is on it's way out. Like any fad, it's something new and different that wows people until they've seen it over and over....
similar to edible images.....a few years ago, an edible image was so cool....now....unless it is used in an original way....a photo on a cake is pretty common and has lost the "wow" factor.
I think they could add a lot of fun to a birthday party. It would just add the atmosphere of the party. I don't think I would personally like them for a wedding unless...it was more of a party type reception and the reception hall was done in whimsical party colors. I love to have fun...so, I guess if the cake adds to that wooohooo!!! lol
Thanks everyone. I have given them another look and another thought and I believe that it is probably because I am such a symetrical person. You know the type that everything has to be even lol like the windows in a house have to line up or all the pictures on a wall have to be in some sort of uniform fashion and that sort of thing lol. But it is nice to read everyone's take on them just the same.
Darlene
I think the whimsical topsy turvey cakes are great for kids parties. I have not tried one yet either. I like "my" stuff all symetrical, but since I have a soon to be 4 y/o, a 5 y/o, a soon to be 10 y/o and a 13 y/o, I get to see things from their perspective too. And things like that are "Oh so awesome Mom!", so for their enjoyment, I can totally see how fun these cakes can be. If that makes any sense ![]()
I have only made one out of a three D pan..and I will never make it again.
I personally do not like them. The ones i've seen here, if they are made well, meaning in good taste
, color and degree of decoration, I think they are worth
looking at. But if they are "not so great"
, then I wouldn't waste my time looking. but that's just me, like everyone else.
Isn't this a great country ?
we can disagree without losing our heads..

I agree that this is a personal preference matter and no post here has come across as rude (at least to me). I am very excited to try one myself, as I think they are fun and add some excitement to an event...like my upcoming birthday! I remember in our Wilton class they taught the ribbon borders and soem in our class loved it and thought of what frilly cakes they could make, others (me included) thought 'yuck'. Does not suit my style or taste, but I like sotas and many people do not...different strokes for different folks is all I guess!
Sometimes I look at them and think "wow! I want an excuse to do one" and sometimes I think they're just too over the top and over done now.
I think it has more to do with the subject matter and colors than the tilted cakes - because that's kind of how I am about any cake. But I'm not sure either.
Yep - I'd be a fence-rider on this issue.
I like the ones that are very well done, meaning sharp corners and angles with very crisp details. The bright colors are ok. I think they can look very bad if not done right.
I tried to explain a topsy turvy cake to my non-cake making sister without a picture, and told her they have a lop-sided appearnce and she said, "Well, isn't that what you try NOT to do when making a cake? Mine come out of the oven that way, It can't be hard." I just died laughing because her oven IS crooked, so all of her stuff does come out uneven. I havn't tried one because I think that mine will be the very UN-professional yucky kind.
I think this kind of cakes are only for a themed party like Dr. Seuss or Alice In Wonderland other than that I think they make ugly wedding cakes. Just my .02
