Help! The Bow Is Too Big. Should I Redo?

Help! I'm doing this cake for a sweet 16 party tomorrow night. I found it here on CC and the birthday girl had to have this cake, with a few roses thrown in for good measure. I had made the bow loops earlier this week with 50/50 gumpaste/fondant, but now that I'm putting the cake together, I've noticed that the loops are way too big and will hang over the edge of the cake about an inch.

I have more gumpaste/fondant and I was thinking about redoing them, but I was going to use my remaining GP/F for the tails.

Do you think that having the loops hang over the edge of the cake will look bad? Should I redo them? Will there be time to dry in 15 hours in this humid Kansas environment? What would dry the fastest - straight gumpaste, gp/f, straight packaged fondant, straight MMF, packaged fondant with gumtex or MMF with gumtex?

well - unless this photo is NOT your cake, I don't think the loops are too big at all! If this is NOT your cake, can you show us what you mean?

actually, this is the cake I'm modeling mine after. I'll take a photo of the bow loops atop my cake just so you can see what I mean.

Okay, I already know the answer to my question. Yes, I need to redo the loops. Perhaps not so wide - 2" instead of 3"? And about the loop is about 2" long, perhaps 2.5" long? (It's an 8" cake).

I don't know why I didn't ask myself these things before. I just got it in my head the size it needed to be. Even checked it out against the cake pan, but only once and I guess each successive loop got bigger. thumbsdown.gif

I guess I don't need it to dry rock solid. Just the one hour that the center loop has been sitting, it's gotten decently dry. So drying loops overnight won't be that bad.

Actually I don't think it's all that bad....I kinda like it that size. The center loop could be a little bigger, but I actually like the fullness you've got going on here.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - if it were MY cake, I wouldn't change it. BUT - it is YOUR cake so this is just MY opinion! icon_lol.gif

I don't think it's bad either! I've always been partial to a large bow, but that's just me. I agree with DelightsByE - I wouldn't change it either, but it is YOUR cake, so do what works for you. BUT - I don't think you need to change a thing! icon_lol.gif

really? Hmm... I'll have to sleep on it, I guess. What do you mean by bigger (eta bigger center loop)? Fatter, fuller, rounder?

I think that as long as the loops dry poofy, and don't become flattened, then this should be very nice. So, I would just make sure you really have the loops propped up well. Very nice work. Nice and uniform. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for the compliment! The loops are pretty much rock solid at this point. The center loop was the one piece left. And the tails I'll have to do tomorrow since I need to drape them down the cake.

Gosh, here I was thinking it looked horrible and I've gotten positive responses from y'all! Thanks so much! I guess I'm just sleep-deprived (way too much going on this week!) and I just need to take a fresh look at it in the morning.

Thanks again!

I have to agree with everybody else, I like the big loops, I think it adds to the cake as the whole point of it is the bow, so it looks good to me!! Don't forget to post your finished cake, I'm sure it will be lovely! Get some rest and good luck!!

I ended up redoing it but it's not much smaller. I guess I just gravitate towards large bows. icon_wink.gif

Here are a couple of photos before I head over to the event site. I'm going to finish the bow and place the flowers once I'm there.

Thanks again for your help!

Christy,
They are noticably smaller, but not in a bad way. Just when you scroll back and look at the other set, you can tell this is, I want to say, tighter. This ended up looking very nice. I think you can be proud of this work.
