If you are attaching flat fondant objects, you can use just a little dab of water to attach them to the fondant cake. You can "write" on fondant with royal, buttercream (although if it sits too long it may "grease" out onto your fondant) or food writer pens.

You can also mix a mit of fondant with water so you get a piping consistency and use this. If whatever I am attaching is light I use water if it's a bit heavier I use the fondant/water mix

I saw on one of the Food Network Cake shows that one of the decorators used a clothing steamer and lightly steamed his cake to lay on his decorations, thought this was kinda nifty. He was working with fondant.

I use a little dab of water. The only time I steam fondant is when the cake is completely covered and I am going for the shiny effect.

When I made my gumpaste flowers they were on toothpicks and we just layed them on the cake. But water or even some vanilla extract will do.
