This is my first attempt at cornelli lace. I will be adding a monogram to the oval in red. I need honest opinions and also suggestions for the top border. This is for a rehearsal dinner tomorrow night. I think I may come home at lunch tomorrow and add the monogram so the red won't run. Any opinions greatly appreciated... Critiques are what make us better... but be gentle..~Tonja

Very pretty..... If I did a border at all I might do a reverse shell. Nice work.

Does it look like cornelli lace? It just looks like squiggles to me!

Cornelli lace IS more or less supposed o be "squiggled" on . . . the only constructive suggestion I have is next time aim for the shapes to be slightly softer and more rounded (not perfectly round - just not quite as sharp turns). But it looks just fine . . . and once the monogram is in place I think it will be a wonderful effect.

Yes, it looks like cornelli lace. Squiggles is basically what cornelli lace is. You did a very nice job on your first try. One thing to remember is that you do not want any of your lines to cross. It is supposed to look like one continuous line all over the cake. It's very hard on my hand to do this technique.

As far as the border, I agree that if you know how to do a reverse shell, it would look very nice.
Hope this helps. Checked your gallery and your
cakes look great!!

How did you get the oval so perfect? good job! I agree with LadyG ... if you do a border, the reverse shell will look pretty. Are you going to border the oval or leave it plain?

I wont have time to fix it.... do ya'll think the red will bleed if i do it tonight???? I thinned with corn syrup... should that affect bleeding?? ARGGGHH too much stress!!!

I haven't tried the reverse shell myself yet but I love the look. I think I'd do small dots or small elongated shell border around the monogram. Your corneli lace looks good for your first try. Practice is what it takes for anything. You're looking good so far. Keep it up.

I use a SMBC so I do not know a whole lot about bleeding. You could always do it on fondant and then apply it to the cake. That way if you mess up you do not have to start over.

I think your corn. lace looks wonderful, I know this probably wont help for this cake, but I use chocolate transfers to do my writing, thus i do not worry about bleeding and mistakes. It is a very neat and sharp looking. check out my site as most all my cakes have ct writing on them. you are limited only by what you can print on your computer in reverse of course.

It does look very nice! One suggestion from my wife (Fantasy_Art) is when making the lace if you feel like it is looking like squiggles, do like your writing S's and R's. It should keep the pattern looking random and constantly turning. Not connecting the R's of coarse.
