Covering Base Boards With Fondant

I need some clear instructions on how to cover a base board with fondant.
I tried this once and when i put the cake on it, it moved and tore. Is there a technique? Some secrets? How do so many of you get them to look so smooth? And how do you round it over the sides?

I've never done it ... but the instructions that I was given was spread a thin layer of piping gel on the board and cover with fondant. Trim around the edge of the board and then cover with ribbon.

In the Wilton Yearbooks - it says to spread piping gel on the board, then cover it with the fondant.

you could also wet the surface you are covering with water and make it stick that away.


But, the key is to do this a day or so in advance so that it dries. If you do it the same day - it may be too soft and dent or tear on you.

Thanks for the tips! I am going to be doing this for a wedding cake on Sunday and didnt even think to do it ahead! I guess I need to get busy tonight!

Do you put your cake directly on the fondant, or do you place the cake on a cake board first, and then place it on the fondant-covered board?

Ooh, good question! Mine was on a board, (the one that tore?) so how about some input on if that was correct?

And thank you for the great directions! I didn't use the piping get OR let it dry first, so that was probably why I had such a disaster.

I try to do this at least a day in advance (but have done it the day of). I just roll out the fondant, between 1/8" and 1/4" and put it on the board. Then I smooth it out, and use my pizza cutter to trim the edges. I then hot glue a ribbon around the edge to cover the cardboard/fondant. I don't bring the fondant down the sides. I then transfer the entire cake to this board. The bottom layer would be on a separate board. Then add borders if necessary.
