Cutting A Tiered Cake

How do you cut a tiered cake if ther is no cake board under each tier? Do tiered cakes have to have a board?

They should have the boards and dowels supporting them up. this way you can cut the cake without cutting all the way down through the next tier and you don't have to worry about the top tier sinking into the middle of the bottom tier.

i think you always have to have either a cake board or a cake plate under each tier .. i always do on mine anyways...
