Ok all, i have my first tiered cake to start today. I bought foamcore to go inbetween the two layers (8" and 12" square). So i cut the foamcore to 8" for the top tier so that it can sit on the 12" bottom tier with wood dowels. The question is do i cover the foamcore or not???

I know if it was cardboard i would so it wouldnt weaken but what about foamcore?

I never cover my foamcore, I would cut my circle about 7" so it won't show, of course you can always hide with border.

I cover mine with contact paper.

I don't cover my foamcore. The paper is extremely strong and doesn't tear or cut easily, even when wet, so I don't worry about anything being cut by the knife and then dragged into a slice of cake. Unlike cardboards, the foamcore will not absorb liquids or fats from the cake, so it doesn't weaken or warp.

I wipe off my boards before putting on a small amount of icing and then apply the cake tier.
