Monday night I was supposed to start my Wilton 1 class. My babysitter backed out so I couldn't go. I called the instructor and she told me that I'd missed so much the 1st night that there was no way possible I could catch up icon_mad.gif . Then she tells me I'll have to wait until September to take the class. icon_cry.gif

Can anyone who has taken the class please tell me what I may have missed? She wouldn't even tell me that!

Wouldn't she let you take the class on another night? There were people in our class who, if they couldn't come one night, the instructor told them to come in another class.

well we didn't do anything really important on the first night, went over what we'll be needing for the other classes and went over the stuff in our kit...that was pretty much it.

Hi There -
Matter of fact, I was at my Wilton I first class session just last night (Michaels store). The instructor hands you a book, goes over essential basics like baking a nice, flat cake, what a good buttercream and good icing recipe should look and feel like (she hands around her samples so you can stir it and feel stiff, medium and loose icing), and then demonstrates on a cake. The instructor said that the first night of Wilton I is the only night that she would be bringing and decorating a cake - all the subsequent classes would have the students bringing in a pre-baked and pre-frosted cake, extra icing to work with, and that she would go over with us all the basic steps. Then she took us out into the store to show us what we should/could buy for the class.

I'm really surprised that your instructor is being so strict about not coming for sessions 2, 3 and 4 - our instructor was missing 2 students last night, but said they could catch up, as long as they brought their prepped cakes and icing to the next class.

In fact, because we're going on a family vacation, I'm going to miss class #3 and she said I could come in a bit early for class #4, and she would be happy to go over what I missed!!

Good luck, I know how much I anticipated going to my class - I hope you can find a more forgiving instructor.

I agree with Ali. In fact it sounds like the same instructor. I live in Massachusetts too. It doesn't sound like your instructor really wants to help you out for some reason. I missed some classes and my instructor asked me if I would like to come in early the next week and she would catch me up on what I missed. I would talk to the store manager if I were you, that is, if you are taking classes at a store like AC Moore or Michaels.

I'm taking the class at a Michaels store. I called and spoke with some of the people on tuesday and they told me that I didn't miss that much. If this woman is going to be teaching the next class I'm not sure if I even want to go!

Well, I woulod write Wilton and complain! Shoot, she knows there isn't much going on in the first class and she could have told you to get the student kit and follow what to book says top bring for the second class. Heck, with my Wilton 1 class, the instructor didn't show up for the last class and we decided to stick together and work as a group. Joanns didn't even give us our certificates of completion! As a result, no more classes for me at Joann's.

I'm with you on that! Get a refund and find out if there is another class someplace else.

I am a Wilton Instructor and I do know of one reason she may not let you join after the first class. Not all stores are strict about this, but in my store, I only get paid for the number of people who comes to the first class. If I have 10 signups, and only 4 show, I get paid for 4 students throughout the whole course wether the other 6 people show up after that first night or not. For that reason, I will not let anyone miss the first class of any course. I don't mind them missing one of the other classes, but if they can't make the first class, they have to go to a different class, that month if I have another one available, or in a different month. BTW, I am also in Mass. LOL.

Well that makes sense, so why didn't she just tell the truth if that's the case? Why say she missed so much that she will NEVER catch up?

I loved my instructor. She was great at explaining everything we would need for upcoming classes and took the time to work with us individually if we were having problems. She even brought in pics of cakes she does for clients and also let some of the students borrow a tip or a bag if they forgot theirs. I made sure to ask if she would be teaching my next class. I do remember a new instructor stopped by one night before class to talk to her. I heard this new instructor say that she was still learning to make roses icon_eek.gif ? I thought you needed to know this to teach the class. I definetly don't want to be in her class. I'm sorry but if you're going to teach me how to decorate you need to know how to do it yourself.

I had two Wilton instructors that allowed students to make for the day and no you did not miss much except the very basics of cake decorating and the different Wilton tools you will be using that course, you can that learn by reading the student handbook, any good Wilton instructor should allow you to make the day especially the first one if she really wants you to continue

Just called today and found out that I missed the 1st class of the WiltonII course this morning. Fortunately, the instructor was having to catch some of the students up on their roses, so I don't think I missed much. I will see next Thursday. Good luck Destini.

It is true that we only get paid based on the number of students in the first class, however in my classes its about the student and not the cash. Therefore in both my current course 1 and course 2 I have 1 student in each class comming in late, and that is ok. You missed nothing that can't be made up.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm still not sure if I want to go back to Micheal's for the class. Since I live near Chicago I have so many other options including Wilton in Darien and a bunch of local bakeries that offer classes. My reason for choosing that store was it's less than 10 minutes away from my house and it's cheaper.

Yea seems funny huh!!! My DH and I agreed in March '06 for my health and the health of our life together I would quit work. DH joked that he gave me 3 months before I couldn't hack being at home with less that 8 hours of contact to shoot the bull with someone. My family acusses me of being able to carry on a conversation with a tree. Now isn't that just love!!! Took the courses as a hobby with one of my daughters. Before course 3 was over my instructor was asking me to come on board, so I did. So I am really a new WMI and to cake decorating in general and found this site in hopes of having more information to teach and help my students. I really want to give more than I got in class. Been looking around for a while.

Well rambeled enough. But thats me guys!!!!

I have already gotten more from here that I could ever repay. So thanks from a newbie.

Melody, just be careful. I know Wilton wants you to teach the "Wilton Method". We develop our own methods through experience, and Wilton might not agree of your passing that information along.

Oh I am very aware of the Wilton restrictions we must work under, however, some of the hints I have picked up here can be used within that framework. But thanks for the caution, I am always ready to take a caution or reminder and need all of them I can get.

Thanks TheVienneaus.
