Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can help me. I am trying to mix the wilton red coloring into royal icing and it is just pink icon_cry.gif . I have practically used half of the container. How do I get an apple red from the wilton icing color? Also, is there another company which sells a good red (and black, for that matter) that will actually die the icing the right color?
Thanks for your help,
Elvira

Switch to Americolor (sold here at CC) right now!! Gives you a great red and uses so much less than Wilton. All their colors are great! And they come in squeeze bottles instead of having to use toothpicks! What Wilton red are you using--some are better than others.

How much icing are you trying to tint? I did just a little and it took half a bottle before it finaly turned red, so if your are using a lot of icing it might take the whole bottle. Also remember that your icing will darken after it sets for a while.

I have used all 3 reds from wilton. I am really frustrated. I am definitely going to switch over to Americolor because I cringe everytime I have to do something red or black. Thanks for the help. Is there anything I can do to the wilton now since I do not have the Americolor yet?

Did you try adding a tiny little bit of black to the red? Sometimes that helps. I'm looking at getting some new colors hopefully tonight, if I can swindle my hubby into it. ha ha. I just don't like wilton's! I'm excited about trying this americolor stuff.

Well, I'll say this--Wilton Christmas Red will never give you red--just a nasty dark pink. And, yeah, it really depends on how much icing you are trying to color, but, you will go through jars of the no-taste red and red red if you need them often. Some people have suggested starting with pink as a base then add the red. But, I'm sure by now you have a nice dark hot pink? Let it set for a bit, and see how much darker it gets--it will darken after sitting for awhile. But, yup, in the mean time, order the Aemicolors--you WILL be VERY happy!

Well, I already ordered americolor. I put the "hot pink" royal icing in the fridge and will look at it again tomorrow. I will go buy some more red wilton on my way home so that I can finish this project. I ordered the big americolors in red and black and as my wilton colors finish I will replace them with the americolors. Thanks for all your help. thumbs_up.gif

I have also heard of people using red koolaid to color the icing, but I have never tried this.

It's nearly impossible to get black in buttercream when using Wilton. I always use a chocolate frosting base then add a tiny bit of black. Works great! Although you have to make sure no one is allergic to chocolate. icon_sad.gif

I tried that kool aid method. I was making an Elmo character cake. It helped with the red color but it gave the bc a tangy taste. The kids liked it but I sure didn't. Good Luck!!!
