Okay, I am so upset! It's 12:30 and I just pulled my bow that I made two nights ago to paint with luster dust....it melted! It was a puddle! I have no idea what happened! Now, I am making another one and the cake is due at 7:00. All I know to do is sent it with the plastic wrap supporting it and maybe by the time she gets ready for the party it will be somewhat setup! I don't understand what could have happened! This tiny little cake, that's only costing her 25.00, is costing me a lot, like my nerves and sleep! Thank you so much for listening to me whine! icon_smile.gif

Was it on the cake? In the refrigerator? What kind of frosting?

It was sitting on top of a cake pan, not on a cake yet.
I always make my bows and let them dry before putting them on a cake. I didn't know they could be immedatly, sp?, put on.

If it's a fonant bow...I add some dry gumpaste powder to the fondant before making the bow. It's usually setup and mostly dry within a few hours.

You had it right- you shouldn't put it on the cake right away, or in the fridge. Those things could cause melting.

The only other thing I could think of is heat & humidity. Maybe gumpaste woudl work better inthose conditions?

Sounds like humidity...been rainy lately or hot...or both? Good luck with the next bow!

No, unfortantly it couldn't be the moisture from rain. We have only had rain once in over a month. It's so dry!
I have no idea what happened. I dumped it into the trash and made another. I placed it on top of the stove with the light on over night. This morning when she came to get it I tried to remove the plastic wrap holding it and it started the collapse. I placed it back in and told her to leave it until she was ready for the party. I don't think they are eating the cake until tommorow. She is taking it several hours away.
Glad it's gone and out of my hair! I now need sleep. so sleeply..

Did it collapse before or after you painted with lustre dust ?

I'm no fondant expert, but I'm wondering if its the plastic wrap. The bow can't dry out and set if air can't get to it, and setting it near a heat source is making it melt.

heat softens fondant, a fan would have helped it dry quicker. the oven light works well for royal icing things but not fondant.

What type of fondant were you using?

I haven't tried it but from what I have read it sounds like it is best to use a mixture of 50/50 fondant/gumpaste. Also heard that the MMF doesn't dry out very quickly or well.

Just a few more thing to think about, but I am no expert.

50/50 worked for my bow it dried within several hours, but i didnt use it until 4 days after i made it it think the heat from the light may have done it

I always use just fondant, wilton, and place plastic wrap in the loops to hold it.
I think it was the fact that the dehumidafier?sp? was turned off. I have a kitchen in the basement and have to have it running at all times.
