Hi. This is my first question here. I've been browsing for days now and there are so many beautiful and creative cakes (and cookies) here! I have much to learn. Anyway, are luster and shimmer the same stuff? Do they work better on fondant vs. BC? I tried a little today on some fondant- dont' think I quite got it right. Does the icing need to be dry already? Then you sprinkle dust on ,and use a wet paint brush to distribute? Any ideas or instruction would be appreciated!

Luster and shimmer dusts are not the same. Luster dust works best (for me at least) when I mix it with a small amount of vanilla, other people use alcohol or lemon juice extract. Don't make it too thin, you want it to look like paint.

Welcome!

Luster dusts and shimmer dust are not the same and not created equal. Yes, use luster dusts mixed with a clear extract (vanilla or lemon) or vodka, gin or everclear for a nice painted on look. Or you can brush them on dry. Shimmer dusts cannot be mixed with anything or else they will clump into a big mess. You can just sprinkle them on to your BC iced cake or for fondant, you can use a piant brust to lightly spread water on the fondant and then sprinkle the shimmer dust on. HTH! icon_biggrin.gif
