I'm making a 70's themed cake for a friend. Basic 2 tier 8 & 10", fondant covered and have all different styles of flowers in 70's type colors all over it. She wants a cake topper on it something to go with the colors that has something with 40 (she's turning 40 as is a friend who their doing the party for)... I was thinking of doing something like "40 is Groovy" or something... but I don't know how to do the words. The pic she sent me of the cake we're basing it off of has a upright word on it...wish I had some cookie cutters with a 70's type funky hippie design of letters icon_biggrin.gif

Any ideas?

For the letters I would just look in your word-program, look if a lettertype appeals to you and print them out the size you want them, cut them out and put them on top of the gumpaste and also cut them
You could attach them to wires or place them around the cake, that would be nice too I think, or just place the 40 on top, if you don't want to use the wires, you could just put a tootpick(cocktailstick we call it here) behind the numbers when you just made them (and they are still a bit sticky), leave them to dry (upside down, otherwise you get the print of the toothpick in them), and stick them in you cake. You could also use floristwire, that fine one, if you have it.

Good luck, the cake idea sounds really great and groovy!! icon_biggrin.gif

A Volkswagon Beetle would be cool, with 40 on its door or licsence plate.

I don't know how this can be done...maybe with gum paste or fondant...
but a disco ball would be cool too! And you can put the number "40" on it...

Or, you could bake a 4 sugar cookie and a 0 sugar cookie. Decorate them with the same colors/patterns as the cake. Large numbers with a spike to insert in the cake, then have "groovy" on wires floating above the 40? What a fun idea - you could do so many things!!

I was thinking of a couple of records that you could stick in the top, and then write the words on those.

How about a couple of records like HeatherBecker suggested but with "Top 40" or "This weeks Top 40" written on them?

Try these sites for some ideas. I use fonts all of the time for writing. These are free sites.

The last one, "bell bottom laser" is pretty 70's. Hope this helps.

Have to have love and a peace sign somewhere and too bad you cant do plaid bellbottoms!! I looked at an old picture of my family and all of us were wearing plaid of some sort! It was horrible! Like a plaid nightmare!!
Also, the smiley face came out at that time too. I would put random things like that with your flower power flowers and then on the top I would do the record thing like they said with some sort of snappy caption. Also, I would make the record of an actual record label and maybe a song that was popular at that time.
