Need 80Th Ideas And Standing Numbers Help
Decorating By AgentCakeBaker Updated 11 Aug 2006 , 2:00am by BeckySue
One of my co-workers wants a cake for her father's 80th birthday. She wants a two tier cake with #80 on top. I'm waiting on her to let me know what his favorite hobbies are, colors, etc.
For the meantime, does anyone have in general ideas in mind? How can I get the 80 to stand on the top tier?
I'm using a 6" and 10" cake, what would you charge for this?
in this picture, I just quickly made chocolate letters. This was a last min set though the others broke...... this set was pretty screwed up but it did the job. Not too bad for a donated cake for a cake walk.
then to make them stand up I just squirted a "pile" of frosting behind because I didnt have lollipop sticks....
So if I use lollipop sticks to stand them up would I just use icing to attach the sticks to the letters?
I would use candy melts and lollipop sticks. I have done alot of choc. transfers now and usually I stand them up in the icing but because of the size of these I think I would use the sticks. You could attach the stick to the number with more candy melts that are the same color and it wouldn't be noticable.

Did you use a pattern to make the one or a candy/fondant mold?
I did it freehand, it was all straight lines. You could use an "8" and a "0" cookie cutter, or even jell-o gigglers cutters. Or type them out using your favorite font, then print on paper, put wax paper over them, then trace. Then roll out your fondant, lay the wax paper over it, using a toothpick trace over your numbers again. Remove the wax paper and cut following the lines you made pressing through the wax paper. Make sense?
You can buy the molds from Cake Carousel that have the numbers with the pick part attached. You can use the candy melts and pour into the mold. When they are set you will have one solid number with a spike on it to put into the cake, They are great and fast. I use them all the time for birthday cakes instead of writing how old they are, I use the number molds, they make a nice touch. Of course you can do your own, but it does take longer. Just a suggestion.
Thanks all...I am looking for a quicker way to do this so I will probably use the candy molds.
Thanks again!
I did the same thing with candy melts... I printed the numbers in reverse on a piece of paper and then covered with wax paper. I outlined the numbers and then filled them in. (Slowly as to avoid bubbles...) I did the numbers the day before and kept them in the fridge. I added a bead border on the front side then I "glued" the numbers to small dowels with melted candy, and then just stuck them in the cake....
PS: I LOVE Stone Mountain!! It is so beautiful there!!
