it's true about costco/BJ and Sam's making their profit off the membership. I used to be a bakery manager for 4 years for one these wholesale clubs. The only thing they really mark up are items in the fresh areas...that they actually bake and make. Sometimes they sell things at cost and don't make a single dime off it. The membership is only $40 a year, so if you pay that extra 5% upcharge (where I was it was 10%), by the time you shop 3 times, that membership pays for itself. But everytime someone buys a membership, it is straight profit for the club.

ok here you guys go:

10" 2 layer round feeds 16 basic is 9.87 custom is 12.87

1/2 sheet (11x15) feeds 48(2x2x1) basic 15.23 custom is 19.73

full sheet (15x22) feeds 96(2x2x1)basic 26.95 custom is 30.87

the 2 filled cakes don't cost more the carrot cake does. everything but the 10" is a single layer cake. prices may vary according to location and i don't know anything about 2 layer sheet cakes we dont offer them.

I think there's a market for everything out there, cheap to expensive.  It all depends on situations.

Plus a lot of people have budgets, too.  My store is within a couple of miles of two longstanding high-end retail bakeries who do everything including wedding cakes.   We've been getting a lot of requests lately for custom-within-reason cakes, and we just know that people are shopping around for the best price within their budget.

Of course we have to turn many people away because we don't do tiered cakes, for example, nor do we do fondant, and our flavor selection is limited.  What we do have, though, are talented decorators, and many people will request only [name] to do their order.

There are lots of people out there undercharging for cakes - many customers are getting more than what they paid for..
