I've seen a coupla recipes I wanna try. They call for amaretto liqueur. Do you have to go to a liquor store for that or where would i find it? I don't drink and have never set foot in a liquor store so I have no clue.

Also, does anyone know of a website to figure out conversion rates for recipes? I have no idea how many cups equals 100g of cocoa. icon_sad.gif

I think you might be able to find amaretto flavoring at the grocery store.
For the real stuff yes you would have to go to a liquor store.

Amaretto flavoring is almond. Depending on how much amaretto it calls for, you can just use almond extract.

If anything just find someone at the store and ask them where their amaretto liqueur is in the liquor isle and I am sure they would show you where its at...then if anything just be like "OH there it is, i went right past it..." lol

as for conversions, if i ever need one i usually go to this site

http://www.onlineconversion.com/

then click on cooking and you should be able convert whatever. The site is great for converting anything though... icon_smile.gif

Actually, amaretto isn't almond, it's bitter almond, which is made from peach and/or cherry pits. Amare means bitter in Italian.

If you are uncomfortable in a liquor store, they do make amaretto extracts. here's a link to some:

Be advised, though, that extracts have a much higher alcohol content than mild liqueurs like amaretto.

If you decide to get amaretto liqueur, a good brand is Di Saronno Amaretto.

Then you can have your cup of coffee with a shot of amaretto, topped with whipped cream. icon_biggrin.gif

You don't have to go to a liquer store to find this either. Most grocery stores have a liquer isle or two and it is a common one so you could take a look at your grocery store too.

Depending on the state you're in, you may have to go to the liquor store. In Texas, for example, you can only find beer and wine at the grocery store. In Colorado, you can't even get wine at the grocery store, or full strength beer. 3.2% beer is the only alcoholic beverage available without going to the liquor store.

Just looked it up, and in Virginia, you will have to go to an "ABC" store, which is the state run liquor store managed by the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control.

Edited to add one last thing (regarding brand):

If you are going to drink it straight or on the rocks, Di Saronno is awesome, but it's also between $30 and $40 a bottle. For cooking, even for mixing with coffee or hot chocolate, the cheap stuff is all you need.

Oh I love where I live. Here in New Orleans you can get any form of alcoholic beverage just about anywhere. Drive thru daiquris anyone??? Hey, at least they now (somewhat) enforce the rule of no open containers by not giving you them with the straw!!!!

But back on topic, I agree that Di Saronno is one of the best, but expensive for cooking. I'd just use an off brand.

I don't know what your recipe is or how the alcohol will be used in it but for some things I've used flavored coffee syrups (the stuff they put in lattes). It works especially well for moistening syrups if you ever use them. I used DaVinci's Creme de Cocoa syrup on a cake this week and I had lots of positive comments on it. At about $3.00 a bottle and I picked it up with some other supplies (meaning I didn't have to make the syrup!) it works perfectly for me. Now if I could only get a latte machine... icon_lol.gif

I found 2 recipes on here that sounds yummy and I was actually inspired to look for them after seeing one of the cakes on People.com. It's the Amaretto Divine cake and the Chocolate Amaretto Frosting. The cake calls for a cup of hte liqueur and some of the non-dairy flavored creamer.

I've mostly done white, yellow or chocolate cake and I wanna branch out more with my flavors!
