what's a smash cake? I've seen it mentioned a few times in the gallery...

I think generally it is a small cake for the birthday boy or girl to eat (like a seperate cake for a first birthday)

It's a small cake, usually decorated to match the main birthday cake for a 1 year old. The reason it's called a "smash" cake is because the birthday boy/girl usually ends up smashing it more than eating it. It's for fun, basically. Makes for really cute pictures!
