Figuring Out What Flavors Go Well Together.

How do you guys figure out what kind of cake goes well with a flavored filling. Like chocolate cake with strawberry filling sounds like it would be good. Do you just experiment? I want to make a baby shower cake for a girl at work but I just don't want a regular cake. I want to mix it up..but not too much where she may not like a flavor. I know she likes strawberries because she drinks alot of those dunkin donut strawberry freezees (forget the real name of them!)
She ate the last cake I made with cookies and cream filling. Is there a listing anywhere of different combinations?
Thanks!
Trial and error....I come up with combos and then try them out...I have a group of neighbors who are the "testers"..they try out any new combos and rate them for me.
Having testers tell you their honest opinions about the flavors is a good idea but having one set of testers trying everything all the time isn't good in one way, all different people have different tastes. I personally think chocolate cake and strawberry filling sounds gross but I just asked my husband and he says that sounds good. But as a beginner cake maker I know nothing but I think having numbers of people trying them like honest family members would be a good place to start your trial and errors. Don't mean to hurt anyone just my .02
I did a strawberries and cream cake last week layering vanilla and strawberry cake with whipped cream. It came out fantastic, I think your co-worker would enjoy this if she really likes strawberry.
Good Luck!
