My BF's parents are celebrating 31 years of being married on Aug 16th (Ironically the date that me and my bf began dating) ....Well he asked me to make a cake for them and it would give my hand a little practice.

The modern theme is Timepieces for a 31st wedding anniversary. Any idea how to do this? I was thinking of doing a double layer cake, maybe have the face of a clock on the top one, but now im not so sure. Any ideas guys?
You guys are great!

you can make a heart cake with flowers outlining the cake (the colors can be from their wedding)

What are some of their interests?

Well Horses, chickens? I guess? lol I dont really know their interests. Father owns horses for horse racing, mother works at a bank, comes home and works w/the children on homework/makes dinner gets everyone ready for bed, cleans animals and goes to bed herself. (not much free time)
I don't know what they really enjoy, so i couldn't do more of a themed cake. So im going for the clock thing I think...

How does this sound.
two layer cake, top cake is a fancy face of a clock then the decorations are fondant gears and stuff, because I've recently seen jewelry made out of clock gears and such and they are super cute and stuff. I just dunno what TIME to make it lol.

I think the timepiece is a great idea! Can you suggest to your boyfriend to get them an engraved clock, and have a whole theme going?
For the time on the clock, could you have both hands pointing to 12, and then instead of the number 12, have their anniversary date?

I like the clock idea, too. One recently posted photo had a pac man ghost that was made with the round pans, but standing up on its side. I don't know if you were already planning that way, but for the top layer clock you could have it standing up like that so the face is on the "side" not the top of the cake.
