So I want to make the gumball machine cake like this:
http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=509743

Mine was going to be smaller, mostly because the glass bowl I found was smaller. I was going to stack 6 inch rounds up to 6 or 7 inches tall. I was planning to dowel half way up, plus dowel for the glass gumball part and also a center dowel.. All of a sudden I am getting nervous that it will be too narrow to tolerate that much height. I am afraid it will topple over, especially since I have to drive it 2 hours.

The last cake I did was a disaster, so I think I am having self doubts.

transport w/ glass bowl and top NOT in place (just like duff did) and assemble it there.

as long as base is proportional to bowl,
and you dowel like you say you will
and you don't hit lots of pot holes or meet up w/ wacko drivers
and maybe even have someone guard the cake should be ok.

why risk chance of breaking the bowl? let alone the cake

Duff even left the gumballs OUT of the bowl until he got to site and assembled.

(four parts transported SEPARATELY: base, bowl, top and gumballs in a bag)

ooohh! now I have myself too worried about it! Maybe I will just save that cake for my son's birthday when I dont have to take it anywhere LOL! I was given the opportunity to come up with the design, so maybe I will just do something else.

oh...pshaw ....you can do it.

just keeping the kids from attacking the gumballs will be your biggest challenge!

FYI - for that episode, Duff actually put the glass bowl on right side up (the open part on the top) then filled with gumballs, and then put the fondant "top" on the open end of the bowl. Unlike a real gumball machine, the opening doesn't need to be on the bottom because there is no need for the gumballs to exit. It was funny - Duff was thinking the bowl needed to be upside down so it would "work" (same way i was thinking) and someone else pointed out that it was unnecessary to do it that way.

Good luck!
