My son's birthday is approaching and I will attempt to make this cake for his party! Now here is my question....
For the black lines (spider web lines) can I use piping gel tinted in black instead of black buttercream?
How will the piping gel taste like? Is this not a good idea? I appreciate any advice.

You can use gel..it doesn't matter. The gel tastes just fine also.!!

Now, you experts- correct me if I'm wrong, but I've had black piping gel bleed into its surrounding color(s)!!! Very unattractive! Maybe it's something I did, though. Hope it works out for you! Happy baking! icon_smile.gif

I haven't had that problem but I'm sure it has happened. When I made the 3D Spiderman I just used black BC.

That's what I will be using for my spidey cake- black BC. To make black, I always start with chocolate BC, then add Wilton black. Works every time. HTH! icon_smile.gif

How much red do you think I will need??? I have a brand new 4.5 oz of the americolor red red will that be enough to achieve a true red icing? should I start off with white icing? I have never tinted that much icing before.

That's more than enough Red color. You don't need as much as you think.I think I made 2 batches of BC and that was all I needed.
