There is no reason why you cannot make a whimsical cake that is decorated in just buttercream, just remember that you will be more limited as to the decorations you can put on.

The trick to whimsical cakes is not how you decorate it, but how you carve and stack them.

as cheap as MMF is, oh give it a try.
it's just like playing w/ play-doh!
my sis was amazed at how fast and easy is was to work w/ MMF (she hates to bake but liked playing w/ MMF)

Yup, I've practiced topsy turvy cakes with just buttercream. Have fun with the colors...Like, do each layer a different color, and then do a cornelli lace on each color. Just a suggestion!

Did you see the Food Network Celebration Cake Team Challenge last week?

One contestant iced the whimsical cake tiers upside down so it would be easier to do the sides.

Try that and let us know how it works.

Of course you can. However, you can go pick up a small box of four different color fondants that Wilton makes. Yes it tastes yucky but so what. Just pull it off.

That way you can cut out and play with fondant without doing a whole cake in it. Just use the fondant for the decorations.

No question is ever dumb. The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Yes you can do it with all buttercream. You won't have the accents that would be available to you if you used fondant though. But you could use party picks and things like that. Good luck.
