I would love to make this cake for my brother's birthday this weekend. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this? Thanks in advance..

1) you can PM the creator: rydersmom for help

2) note it's done classic wilton stars method.

3) biggest challenge is to get outline of image+words on cake. options:
piping gel transfer: http://www.cakecentral.com/article45-How-to-Decorate-with-Piping-Gel.html

print out and cut out then trace onto cake
or
print out, don't cut out -- lay on cake and use a toothpick to poke holes around edge of design and into base frosting on the cake

I would think you could probably find the font online somewhere and print to the size you want. Then either do the pin-prick method to trace the letters on your cake or trace it on rice paper and lay it down and then pipe the stars on top.

I don't know how you would go about making the design up in the right corner - although perhaps you could just eye-ball it once you get the lettering done.

Here's a pretty good image, you can blow it up or find bigger ones online.

I would gel it on as well.

even bigger copy of image:

(these old eyes need it as large and clear as possible)

HINT:

save image to disk

open in PAINT and select invert colors form IMAGE menu. so you get black design on white background. will probably be easier to work w/ and will use LOTS less ink to print out

OR if you dont mind not doing the star method, you could print out the image in reverse and do it with a frozen buttercream transfer. then the icing would be flat.

OK... I'm having one of THOSE days! I could not tell what the image was up in the corner when I looked at the cake. Then I looked at one of the images that was posted and saw what it was. Now when I look at the cake - it's plain as day! icon_redface.gif

*thinks my brain needs an adjustment!*

You can also try rice paper.....draw or trace your design on it with edible pens........trim to outline of design.....place on cake and either use the star tip or gel to fill in.

you can get rice paper at most cake decorating stores....it is fully edible

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I'm going to try a gel transfer. I think I'll reverse the colors (thanks Doug) and do the gel in black and frost the cake white. Wish me luck! icon_smile.gif Oh and thanks Doug & CakesbyMonica for the images.

You are going to frost over the gel? or do a thick layer of gel on top of the white icing? The gel we were talking about is just to get the image on the cake. Just want to make sure we're all communicating properly and your cake comes out good. A gel transfer is a light layer of gel to guide your other frosting fill-in. Please excuse me if you know this already. icon_smile.gif Can't wait to see the cake!

Well I finished the cake - not very happy with it. I wanted to try to do the gel technique, but ended up doing a FBCT. I baked the cake late last night and did the transfer as my brother was on his way to the house. Talk about rushed, oh well.
Thanks everyone for your help. icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

not satisfied???

-- oh, stop beating yourself up!

that's a great cake!

(of course -- being a guy -- a bullet hole w/ blood dripping out on one side could have been a fun addition! icon_rolleyes.gif)
