Hi,
I have someone interested in a wedding cake with hydrangeas. Is it hard to make gumpaste or fondant hydrangeas? Should I just do silk? If anyone has any suggestions or whatnot I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I had a bride that hydrangeas were her wedding flower too. I didn't feel confident enough to use the ones I made for the wedding, so I used silk. They looked nice. If you have time, maybe you could practice making a few and see how you think they look. I don't know if this helps any but thought I'd send you my opinion. Good luck!!

Their just very time consuming. I would either suggest the silk option or get some to look at while you make them so that you can mimic the natural look of them.

I saved a video clip from a previous post that might help a bit. She does the hydrandea after the rose. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=674553
Very pretty, seems time consuming though.

I did a wedding cake with fresh hydangea. They held up really well and look great.

I mostly use freash flowers on all my cakes unless someone requests a color that you can't get with fresh flowers

According to this chart, hydrangeas are non-edible and poisonous: http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/blflowersnot.htm

I would not use fresh hydrangeas on a cake. Go with the silk if you decide not to make them out of gumpaste.

I used some silk ones on my wilton course 3 final cake. Mostly because I was too lazy or busy to make all of those roses! LOL. They looked pretty good.

Thanks everyone. I talked to the Bride last night. I think she wants me to make them. I better get started now. It's going to take me forever. lol

Biya, I couldn't get that link to work. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's the link. I see a cake pic but not a video. Thanks again

I think they're actually super easy. I use this cutter & veiner set: http://beryls.safeshopper.com/124/7254.htm?712

-Make your little centers on a hooked wire and dry.
-Cut out your flowers
-place each flower in the veiner and press
-thread each flower on the dampened center & press to adhere
-to dry, you can either hang them upside-down, or place them down in the squares of a wire rack or food dehydrator rack for support

Looks like they would be a great accent to the cake.

I've made them and they're not hard, but they do take some time. If you want to buy them www.avalondeco.com has them.

The graduation cake I made used apple blossoms that when clustered together gave the imprssion of hydrangas. I believe I used a mixture of kelly green / moss green / lemon yellow to achieve the color
