Hey everyone!

I have a nascar themed cake coming up... so no way to get around not using black!! LOL

I was thinking I would just use any black in fondant instead of buttercream to try and battle the mouth staining issues... (especially since this is an adult 40th bday)....or will fondant do this as well???

Also, anyone know of anywhere to get some cheap little cars that look like Nascar?? (like the numbers, sponsers, etc on them??) I found some chocolate ones wrapped in foil... but this cake will be outside in august.. so probably not the best idea! LOL

Thanks!! icon_biggrin.gif

Can't help you on the fondant questions, but for Nascar cars you can go to Walmart, Target, KMart and get little nascar matchbox and hot wheels cars for a buck or so. My son has a TON of little cars and I know for sure several of them are Nascar. icon_smile.gif

Good Luck

Hi Scoobam
I have used fondant in may ways to create black bits and pieces. What I have found is that you will use heaps of colouring to do black fondant so what I have done in the past is make up some Royal and paint the fondant. Water it down somewhat and use a paint brush to paint it on there. I have found it to have solid colour and works a treat. Also when colouring fondant you have to be careful that it doesnt turn green purple or stay grey due to the amount of colour it takes and cant guarantee that you wont get the black teeth.

As for the cars I cant help you there I live in Australia and have completely different shops to you.

Good luck with it all. If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me.

Cheers
Angela

Accidentally I made black MMF using the dutch processed cocoa (dark cocoa) So if you do that method I doubt it will stain because it is only cocoa powder and no colorings. MUCH easier too. See this thread...

hope that helps!

Just so you know, the actual little NASCARs at Walmart or Kmart, etc, run $5 each. My little guy has about 40 of them and I think every time I buy them what I could do with an extra $200!

If you were going to use BC frosting, and just start with chocolate for the black, you won't have the staining issue. I don't know if people make their black fondant in the same way. I'm sure many have done it.

I have a NASCAR cake coming up as well-my son has changed the driver he wants 4 or 5 times so far, but talks about his birthday cake all the time.

Also if you decide to use buttercream then start with dark chocolate and then add the black. That way you wont have to add much. I just made a cake with a lot of black (see my photos) on it and I was worried that it might stain but nobody scraped it off and nobody's mouth was funny colors. So I am thinking it was because I only had to use a little black. If you are only using it for some details I dont think you'd have too much problems.

Thanks!!

$5 a piece... UGH... better find out who his fav driver is and just get that one and the rest generic.

I just got some satin ice in the mail.. can't wait to try it! I should have just bought black!!! Maybe I still will..
But if I make my own and start with cocoa powder... do I need to add anything else to the fondant to make up for the powder being added?? if you know what i mean.

When i did it (accidentally) my plan was just to decrease the amount of powdered sugar by the amount of cocoa added. I added the cocoa to the melted marshmallows and it was already black (i did not need to use any colorings at all) I thought it would be brown when I added the powdered sugar but it remained black...really black. So there were no additional things needed. If you cant find the dark cocoa you could probably just use the regular but then you'd probably need to add black coloring.

Thanks so much!! Guess I'll just have to see how it goes with the satin ice!

One of these days I will have to try MMF!!

Thanks Angela... I will be practicing beforehand... painting with royal sounds interesting!! I'm going to have to give it a whirl too!! Thanks!
