Hi,
I just asked this question last week, and everyone agreed that it is better to start off with chocolate fondant. Apparently it takes a lot of black coloring when you use white, and it changes the consistency.
Hope this helps!
Val.
Are you purchasing fondant or making your own?
If purchasing then most suggest starting with chocolate. However I have some family that can't have chocolate so I start with white, color brown, then color black.
You can also purchase pre-colored fondant. www.cakesbysam.com carries Satin Ice precolored to Black
If making it all depends on your recipe. I know with MMF you can color the melted marshmallows before adding the PS and it mixes quickly and easily.
If making another recipe hopefully someone else will be able to help b/c I haven't made any others except for MMF.
I made black from white...before I found this website...it took forever! I reached a really dark grey and gave up for the night, luckily it naturally got darker the next day. But it was really frustrating, so I'd say start with the chocolate first!!!

I needed black fondant for a graduation cap. The last time I made black fondant it took forever, so I bought Satin Ice this time. It was surprisingly delicious! I liked it better than my homemade marshmallow fondant!! It was also the right softness right out of the bucket.
