Hi Guys,
I have 2 wedding orders due next weekend & plan on using Luster Dust for the first time. I have never even bought it before. Any tips, helpful hints? When is the best time to put it on fondant & royal icing. The wedding dresses will be fondant with royal icing accents & the starfish & sea shells will be all royal icing. Does it go a long way?
I am going to go buy the Luster Dust tomorrow, what do you use to put it on the cookies. I know I am clueless, sorry. I have been wanting to try it just haven't had the chance or the need yet. I can't wait.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I find it best to apply luster dust on fondant and royal icing when they are dry. Use a soft natural sable brush to apply it. A little goes a loooong way. For easy clean up, I use parchment paper on a plate and place the dust on it - makes it is easy to scoop up the unused dust and return to the container.
After applying the luster dust, I steam to set so it doesn't come off when touched. It will be a little wet after steaming but will set up in just minutes.
I have a traveler's hand held steamer that I use (from Walmart). Just hold the cookie on front of the steam. You will know when it's ready as the area that's steamed will look wet. If you don't have a hand held steamer, a pot with boiled water will work the same. I just find it's easier to manage a hand held as the steam area is limited and already directed to blow to the side (so you just hold the cookie upright).
I've just started using this too, and find it quite easy to work with. I mixed it with a little vodka to get a paint-like consistency and then dab it on with a brush. The vodka evaporates leaving the dust set on the cookie.
I bought tiny Wilton vials, and no, I don't think it goes very far!
