I have seen lots of cakes that have wires with different things mounted on the ends of them coming out of cakes. How are they inserted in the cake? I was wondering if you just stick them in if they rip through the cake and fall? I am doing one this weekend and I want them to stand up so any help is greatly appreciated!

I use plastic coffee stirrers and placing the wires inside them, instead of directly placing them on the cake.

I use the coffee stirrers (or cocktail straws),too. I could fit several wires into one of them and they stayed nicely!!
