I was just wondering if anyone else has run into something like this. When my cousin and his wife were getting married, they designed their own wedding cake. It was beautiful! 4 tiers topsy turvy, pastel colors and harlequin design. Everyone thought it was amazing until they bit into it. My cousin and his wife chose a barley layer, a wheat layer, and 2 other very organtic other layers. My husband took a bite and passed the plate to me, I took a bite and passed the plate to my sister who took a bite and passed it to her husband. No one would eat it.
So my question is how many other people have had clients choose such odd and unappetizing cakes for occasions?
By the way, neither bride or groom is overly healthy in real life, so the cake can't be passed off as part of their lifestyle.
Hmmm, don't know what they were thinking...other than they were playing a joke on the guests. An expensive joke I say.
When a client asks for an unusal flavor, such as diabetic or gluten free, etc., I suggest to them that it's better if we just make a small cake to tuck behind the main one that is the special flavor, then make the rest of the cake regular. I gently remind them that although the wedding is about them, the reception is about the guests, and their comfort.
Oh my, that doesn't sound appealing at all for a cake.
I love atcake's idea to handle such special requests:

It doesn't sound like any of the guests enjoyed the cake.
It was just hilarious, because from the moment everyone saw the cake all we could do was comment on how beautiful it was. Then as soon as it was cut, you started seeing partially eaten pieces lying on all the server's trays. What a waste! That cake cost them at least $700!
That's an absolute shame! Kinda funny though...if a couple really wants a flavor that not everyone will like, I recommend doing just one layer of it.
It's cake for pete's sake some people think they can have a zero calories cake or have cake that won't make them fat just have a smaller piece for those who have allergies that just sucks but 99.9% of the human population want good cake!!!!! I'm sorry this happened to you it makes you wonder if people blame the cake lady
Wow...such odd flavors for cake! Especially since the couple is not "into" the organic lifestyle as you mentioned. I would love to know why they chose those flavors!
On a related note: any home bakers that are not licensed should be careful when making a cake for diabetics or any other people with special dietary needs. You can get into serious trouble should something go wrong. When I had my business (licensed and approved by the board of health) I still did not offer any special dietary needs products. I was told these had to be submitted for research, approval, etc. by certified labs. Well, at least that is the story here in NJ.
